If AMD is moving more discrete units, that bodes well to their future and to consumers who like competition. I don't really see what there is to argue or be upset about.
You don't understand, AMD is lying about their numbers to inflate their stock value. It doesn't matter that this is highly illegal and would be disastrous for a publicly traded company. Good thing the AT detectives are here to find the true results.

They aren't, but whatever.

If anyones curious these are the correct individual quarter market share numbers extrapolated from Mercury Research's 4 quarter moving average (4QMA):
Code:
Quarter: 4QMA: Single quarter share:
2013 q3 36.0 35.3
2013 q4 36.4 36.1
2014 q1 36.2 35.5
2014 q2 36.2 37.9
2014 q3 34.2 27.3
2014 q4 31.3 24.5
2015 q1 28.1 22.7
2015 q2 23.6 19.9
2015 q3 21.2 17.7
2015 q4 20.3 20.9
2016 q1 20.3 22.7
2016 q2 22.8 29.9

Furthermore Jon Peddie also just released their report and they report pretty much the same thing (note that Jon Peddie does not use a moving average):
Code:
Quarter: Single quarter share:
2015 q2 18.0
2015 q3 18.8
2015 q4 21.1
2016 q1 22.8
2016 q2 30.0

All in all both Mercury Research and Jon Peddie shows that AMD has improved their market share from roughly 20% to 30%.

Doesnt make any sense. Mercury is reporting numbers for the quarter. Their market share for Q2 2016 shows the shipment for Q2.

Mercury is not reporting that AMD has won 7,2 points in the desktop segment. Mercury calls AMD wins "modest growth".

Mercury's data was a 4 quarter weighted average. Jon Peddie quoted actual quarterly sales and Y-o-Y comparisons

https://www.pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/AMD-Gains-Significant-Market-Share-Q2-2016

https://jonpeddie.com/press-release...arket-decreased-while-amd-gained-market-share
http://www.design-reuse.com/news/40404/q2-2016-gpu-market-share.html

The quarter in general

AMD's shipments of desktop heterogeneous GPU/CPUs, i.e., APUs, for desktops decreased -22.2% from the previous quarter. AMD's shipments were down -0.4% in notebooks. Desktop discrete GPUs increased 4.03% from last quarter, and notebook discrete shipments decreased -3.7%. AMD's total PC graphics shipments decreased -1.4% from the previous quarter.

Intel's desktop processor embedded graphics (EPGs) shipments decreased from last quarter by -4.5% and notebook processors increased by 1.4%, and total PC graphics shipments decreased -0.7% from last quarter.

Nvidia's desktop discrete GPU shipments were down -28.15% from last quarter; and the company's notebook discrete GPU shipments decreased -5.7%, and total PC graphics shipments decreased -20.0% from last quarter.

AMD did gain 7.1% GPU unit volume market share wrt Nvidia as both sold lesser units but Nvidia's unit volume fall was much larger.

This. Ideally we'd want market share to be 50/50 so that price competition is fiercest, and both firms are trying to one-up one another frequently with newer, faster SKUs and more game bundles. When all we have are GTX1070/1080/Titan XP, all overpriced, and not even a 1080Ti or a fully unlocked Pascal in sight, I don't see how in the world we should be happy about the current dGPU market. It's amazing how some are desperately trying to claim that the market share gains are made up, as if they actually wish for AMD to go bankrupt or cease to be competitive in the high-end market permanently. Ironically, this is coming from the same posters who defended the OG Titan and for years have exclusively recommended NV cards during every single generation, including the completely awful GeForce 5, 7 and Kepler series. I guess some love the idea of paying $650-700 USD / Euro for an upper-mid-range GP204 1080.

I also remember many people on various forums were sighting that the end was near for AMD once they sold their HQs.

AMD Bets Big on Its Own Comeback with New State-of-the-Art Headquarters

The soon to be completed six-story building will provide a modern, upgraded Silicon Valley office featuring contemporary finishes and state-of-the-art features and amenities for up to 1,000 local employees, capable of meeting current needs and accommodating future growth.
“Building on our 47 year legacy of technology innovation and leadership in Silicon Valley, our move to the Santa Clara Square complex will give us a modern and inspiring workspace to continue our leading-edge product development efforts,” said Ruth Cotter, Chief Human Relations Officer and Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at AMD. “The prominent location and compelling work environment will help to foster new ideas in a collaborative environment while helping us to attract top talent in the region.”
AMD has entered into a long-term lease agreement for the new Santa Clara Square building, developed and operated by The Irvine Company. Located less than two miles south of AMD’s current location, the new headquarters will keep AMD close to key customers, partners, and public transportation options. Employee and equipment moves are expected to begin in Q3 2017 and be completed by the end of 2017.

With Zen, and Vega 10/11, new HQs, AMD is posed to improve its financial and market share performance even further in 2017. If anything, this could push NV to pull Volta forward and/or release a refreshed 1170/1180 and 1080Ti. The last time AMD was behind, we got an overpriced $650 780. In hindsight, that wasn't even that bad since this generation NV charges a nice $650-700 for a mid-range die GP204. Nuts.

I never defended titan. I never bought a 5 or 7 series GeForce card. I've recommended AMD in the past. Quit making these selectively false and idiotic comments.

I think you might want to read RS's post again. He never said you did any of those things, in fact he agreed with your post (hence the "This." part of his post, plus the fact that he "liked" your post) and then used it as a springboard to complain about the kind of people who expresses the exact opposite sentiment of your posts. In other words he simply used your post as a contrast to problem he illustrated.

He has directly accused me of it in the past and continues to lump me in with his broad accusations.

These numbers are misleading.

First of all, they only talk about units, not revenue share. Given that NVIDIA has scaled back its efforts to win non-gaming OEM designs (i.e. MacBook Pro, those Carrizo laptops with iGPU + Radeon, etc.), it's not hard for AMD to increase its share of the low-value dGPU market.

Last quarter, NVIDIA reported that revenue from its gaming GPU biz was up 14% quarter-over-quarter and 18% year-over-year. Last quarter, AMD reported that its total computing and graphics segment was down 5% quarter over quarter and up 15% year-over-year "driven by higher client notebook processor and graphics sales."

If AMD's total GPU +CPU biz was up 15% year-over-year and higher notebook APU sales were part of that growth, and if NVIDIA's gaming GPU sales were up 18% year-over-year, then this means that NVIDIA actually gained revenue share in the gaming dGPU market.

Next, AMD is guiding to a ~$200 million increase in revenue for Q3 over Q2 thanks to graphics/semicustom, while NVIDIA is guiding to a $250 million quarter-over-quarter increase in Q3 over Q2. Part of this could be Tegra, but it's probably mostly coming from dGPUs.

So, again in terms of revenue share, NVIDIA should actually gain share on AMD in the coming quarter.

All that would be fantastically "factual" if we were not in a thread so clearly about per-unit market share. Fine if in your opinion this is the wrong metric to be using to best describe the GPU market but that doesn't make this thread in any way misleading (and is not debate for this thread either). If anything your post is the misleading one implying a related metric somehow invalidates this market share data.

Lets make this a discussion about revenue or the Steam Hardware Survey or how the numbers are a lie!
