Of course, the proper pronunciation is YEE-ROWS.

What do you all put on your Gyros?

Me? Just cucumber sauce and lettuce with my meat. :)

(yes, it's another jonny food thread)

Are you sure about that guyver? Every Greek festival I've been to, every Greek person I've known, and even the package my pita bread came in says the word is said with the G silent.

I'm with Guyver. I grew up in a predominantly Greek neighborhood, and I've always know them as GEE-ROWS.

If anything, I've heard it where the G is sort of rolled where it sounds like kkkkkkeeeeeeeeeee-ros!

Hold on... Let me get the Pita package.......

"Grecian Delight Gyros (YEE-ros)"

That's what it says on the box and I've been calling them that since I was a kid.

Doesn't anyone here live in Tarpon Springs?????

I sold them for a living 20 years ago...it is YEE-ROES....silent G. BTW, it's not 'cucumber sauce,' although I've forgotten what it's really called....and the 'meat' in a real one is lamb.

And yeah, that white, gizz-looking sauce is pronounced "ZI-ZIKI." Don't know the real spelling though.

My mom used to make it herself - lots of garlic in it. Hers is the best :D

Wow, a thread about gyro.....amazing.

Well, Mister T and the others are right it's YEE-RO, and I know this for two reasons. 1. I am greek. 2. My parents own a Gyro shop. Therefore, using all my sources I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it YEE-RO and not JY-RO or GEAR-O, or HERO, etc..... :D

You lika the sauce huh? The sauce is good uh? <----that skit killed me :)

[edit]

jonnyGURU...

You haven't had a good gyro till you have it with sour cream sauce and not cucumber sauce. It's much better that way. Oh yeah, and to answer your question, I usually have either lettuce, tomato, and sauce, or just the sauce.
