Gym Flooring on top of carpet

I obviously posted this in the wrong forum originally. OT is full of freakin turds..

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone here can help me find what I am looking for. In our new house (we close on the 30th) we have a spare room that we plan to turn into a small workout room. It's perfect size for my wife an elliptical machine and myself a decent workout area for P90X and small weights.

My problem is, this room is built to be a bedroom....with nice carpet flooring. I plan to turn this room back into a bedroom when we start having kids (more than 1 because we already have a spare another bedroom for 1 youngster). With that said, I do not want to rip up the carpet just to have a workout room. I also do not want to put wear and tear on the carpet while working out (going back and forth on carpet wears it down QUICK).

Instead, I would like to do a 5'x5' up to 7'x7' gym flooring. I have looked online but don't really know what I am looking for. What do you guys suggest on top of carpet (I have seen gym flooring "tiles"). I don't mind spending a couple of hundred dollars on this, but I would think I could get out on this under $100.....or am I dreaming?

IIRC you're in the Dallas are...checkout your local Dicks or Sports Authority. They carry those for cheaper than what I saw online, albeit, probably not as nice a quality. (I'm assuming thinner?) Might also check a HD/Lowes too, but I can't remember if they carry the rubber tiles or not.

I'm no pro or anything, but I think you want a solid base under your rubber. Carpet is not solid, it might be springy, and this is FAIL for things like free weight squats and deadlifts.

Rip up carpet and put plywood boards on the floor, then rubber mats on top. Starting Strength (first edition, donno about 2nd) has instructions on building your own gym.

Crossfit journal has a PDF with similar instructions as well.

I'd put some plywood on top of the carpet and then a layer of rubber. Use some brads to hold the pieces of plywood together.

For the elliptical, you can pick-up a rubber 2'x6' rubber mat especially for such equipment for around $40 at a sporting goods store or exercise equipment store.

For your area, I would suggest thick rubber gym tiles. Both will be fine over carpet as they're very grippy and won't slide on the carpet.

Of course, you should have read the OP where he stated he was not going to rip out the carpet.
