Guy I know wrecked his Ducati 1098... now with pic

He was up at Palomar Mountain over the weekend and said he came into a corner too hot and locked up the front wheel washing out the front end. He went down and he and the bike slid into a guard rail.

He had been trying to sell the bike and had recently taken off the race plastics, replaced both tires, tuned it up and changed the fluids. He's a track day junkie and has been riding for many years.

Bike is totalled. Front end is gone, plastics are tore up, gauge cluster is destroyed.

He is okay, bruised shoulder, sore hip, but he was wearing full leathers, boots, and a helmet.

It is sad when bad things happen to great bikes. 🙁

As an enthusiast you have to be prepared for this. Glad the fall wasnt worse and getting up being able to worry about the bike is great problem to have. Very many falls like this turn into organ donor stories.

I dropped a motorcycle three times pushing it before I realized its ok stay in the safe zone.

Glad hes aight.
 
Sounds like he solved his trying to sell the bike.

Now lets just hope he had full coverage on the bike so he can get paid.
 
Jules I thought this kind of thing never happened? You know guys riding 40 years without even so much as a tipover? 🙄

When have I ever said or implied that? I realize that crashing is a part of motorcycling, that's why I always wear my gear. That's why this guy walked away from his crash and was at work on Monday morning instead of in the ER.
 
Jeez, hopes he doesn't even sneeze wrong. I'm all for putting it over on the pegs, but with proper protection.

Jules, too bad about the bike, but at least he's alive. A guy I used to ride with down in San Antonio died last month when he went off the road. Don't know how but he's dead now and left behind a wife and kid. That said, wasn't the smartest of guys or the best of riders. I passed him in a corner on my GS500 when he was riding a Busa (non-turbo).

As far as the bonehead comment by Alky, only retarded squids don't wear the proper gear when riding. When I would go out into the hill country I wore my 1-piece suit, racing boots, & helmet. When I'm cruising around town I'm still wearing leather boots, motorcycle jacket, & helmet.

1098s are pretty bikes, really like the head on look they have.

Yeah, he's crushed about the mess his bike is now. He was just pushing too hard and made a mistake. The guy is a good rider.

That said, Palomar Mountain is a very unforgiving playground. I've ridden it maybe a dozen times and going up/down the tight side is very technical with 11 miles of tight switchbacks filled with decreasing radius corners and 4000' of elevation change. It is pretty smooth though and a great challenge I think that's why riders like it so much.

I stay away from there on the weekends because everyone loves to go up there and treat it like it is there own personal race track. You get guys with more bravado than talent and that can make for a dangerous ride. CHP is up there nearly every weekend during the summer cracking down on idiot riders. Last time I rode it was on Columbus Day. Very few riders, almost zero cars, and no cops. It was perfect.

Luckily don't see too many cops out that way but I dide see a couple of Border Patrol vehicles out there.

Palomar is only about 30 miles from my house. I can be out there in about 30-40 minutes.
 

I grew up near where he did in upstate NY and at roughly the same time. I recognized the name Tupper Lake. I lived on Chazy Lake and remember seeing a seaplane for the first time on a little river not far from there...wonder if it was his Dad's.

That sucks man. Very sorry to hear that. :'(
