Gustav just gave McCain the perfect excuse to say, "thanks but no thanks" to Bush and Cheney. I think their absence from the convention can only help him.

Sounds like a smart idea to me. McCain can't tell Bush & Cheney he doesn't want them there for fear of ticking off the right wing group even more. This gives him an "out" .... as in "I would have been honored to have them there, but unfortunately they have more significant issues to handle right now", a win-win. The right-wing doesn't get mad, and McCain doesn't have to make his own life more difficult by appearing with Bush etc at the rally.
