They would then have to hire some one to replace me at my old job. They said we will work on a pay raise for you though, as if that fixes it?

It feels better to vent.

It sucks, I know, I am in the same boat. Just updated my resume on CareerBuilder and have been getting responses already. I'll jump ship before long.

Remind them that if you leave, they would also have to hire some one to replace you at your old job.

Of course... that could backfire...

No, this is the same as that hypothetical gun thread. You inform an attacker you have a gun by shooting him with it and you inform an employer you are quitting for another job by resigning and leaving for another job!

So what you're really trying to say is that he should shoot his employer.

I like this. Unfortunately, it requires zero FUD.

start job hunting. once you get the leverage of a better offer, they will either match the offer, or offer you a promotion in compensation.
and if they don't... hey, new job!

i stayed at my last job far too long, because they couldn't get anyone to replace me. it limited my ability to advance, so i quit.

I ended up finding a much better opportunity anyway.

I would have guessed it's because you surf ATOT at work.

Wait, you're getting more money to not have to have more responsibility???

I'm not seeing the downside here.

Maybe a pay raise without the promotion (extra responsibility) is better, think positive.

Sometimes you don't have to actually job hunt - just look like it. When you go to work with a suit on - assuming this isn't everyday attire - the word spreads quickly. And take an extra long lunch. If the boss doesn't notice, this is a message in itself.

At my company, I really don't care what title/promotion they give me, as long as I keep getting pay raises...which I do. Mostly promotions, in my company, are just titles. I'll take the money any day.

Who cares about the promotion?
Do you work for the title or work for the pay? Would you work for free if they called you Assistance CEO?

Tell them they can keep the promotion, and talk compensation. Far as I'm concerned they can call me the janitor, just show me the money!

Make it clear. Your fine right where you are with the title you have (Provided you are of course) and tell them you want adequate monetary compensation. Or, tell them to keep the raise, give you a new title and keep having you do the same thing your doing now so you can brag about your cool title if thats what you would prefer.

I always found it's a good idea to be replaceable. You can move up quicker, take vacations whenever you want, etc.

Also, on the topic of promotions - in most bigger companies the pay raises are capped at like 4-5%. The absolute ONLY way to get more is by a promotion/higher grade level.

What does that mean...."Work on it" ? I would more confident if they could say it a more convincing manner. That wording annoys me.

Money talks.

The words under your name on your business card can't pay the bills.

Depends how well you explain your argument. Call them out on it. They WERE going to promote him, but couldnt because of staffing problems. Fine then, give him the raise as if they had promoted him. Win win. He gets the same raise, they dont have to spend an extra 40k / year backfilling. If they simply wont budge start looking for a new job now.

Thats what I did when I wasnt happy, I applied to internal positions. Over the course of a week I applied for about 50 positions internally. I simply didnt care where I went, which opened up alot of options for me. My supervisor got an email notification on each and every one. We talked about it and I told him it was bullshit, I'm done with this group.

If its a small company your ass out on internal positions, but then again if its a small company you wont have the hard set limit of roughly 5% (Which does exist, but isnt set in stone)

I agree with being replaceable, but the fact is EVERYONE is replaceable. If they tell you otherwise their lying.

Its more of a job title than anything the job title is 20% more pay a regular pay raise is 4-6% so the only way for me to get more money is to get the title. I would have no more job resposibilities than I have now as I already do the senior level work. Its just frustrating that I have the experience to get the job but they wont because its over a pesky issue with having to back fill me even though its the same office and not even me moving to a new desk/truck/area. I would be filling a position left from a co-worker who went on terminal leave, so they have to hire some one either way. This came from HR my manager was all for it.

oh and surfing AT at work is a perk I have wireless internet where ever i go on my job and some times i have to sit an wait for others so AT is a way to pass time.
