Ugh, I only wish I could pay $10 or $11 for a box of 50 9mm at Walmart. I haven't seen it that low since like 2010. I don't have hard numbers for the last time I checked at Walmart (couple weeks ago), but it was at least $15-$16 for a box of 9mm ($20 for .40 S&W).

Yep, cheapest 9mm label I've seen on the shelf at Walmart is still $14.14 I think when I checked this weekend. It's been hovering at $14 a box for the cheapest 9mm at Walmart to match what Academy charges for their cheapest. Which is Monarch brand for $13.99 a box.

You get what you pay for. If you are willing to spend that much for an AR, I suggest you increase your budget and get something a bit more reliable. Read the thread below and you'll see why. There is a real world eval of these buried in that thread on the first page.

If I spend 100-200 on a toy and it is lackluster I learn a lesson and move on. If I spend $600 on something that doesn't always work as designed, I get pissed. Spend a few more hundred and get something that won't make you feel like you just lit $600 on fire.

What then would you consider price gouging? Because, per your explanation, there is no such thing as price gouging. The price is the right price if someone will buy it at that price. Gouging does not exist, which negates your first sentence.

AK's aren't necessarily better but available in that price range and have ammo available that is as cheap or cheaper than .223/5.56

Personally, I have had fewer (as in zero, zilch, nada) issues out of my "unreliable" DPMS than I have had with my BCM, and I have fired far more rounds out of the DPMS.

Problem with AK is the cartridge (tapered case causes unique mag and feeding constraints, short range rainbow trajectory due to large bullet and small case), not the rifle if you get a good one. And good ones are Arsenal, Krebs, etc that run $1000+ and go with 5.45x39 and its just as capable as an AR.

The AR is a bargain. There really isnt anything else in that price range (500-600) unless you count parts kit Cetmes or bottom barrel WASR type AKs. Everything else AR quality is going to be $900+ for a FAL, PTR, etc. AR quality AKs cost more than ARs ironically.

Haven't looked at Saiga or Vepr AKs lately to know where they land. They should be a good quality AR alternative in the $500-600 range?

Generally don't expect any quality centerfire military pattern semi auto rifle outside the AK and AR for under $1000 give or take with the basic $900 ish PTR91/G3 being the next step up price wise for someone who already has a AR or AK.

On the other side of that coin you get into LWRC ARs, 308 AR10s, M1As at $1500 on up.

Check out sales from Palmetto State Armory, especially their PTAC lines. You can get PTAC upper and lower for less than $500 shipped (plus your FFL fee).

Full disclosure: I can not vote for PTAC quality but their regular PSA stuffs are very good from my research.

$280 PSA upper plus $150 lower plus $100 BCG/charging handle plus $37 shipping plus $30 FFL fee for less than $600 (YMMV) total.

Saigas are the best bang for the buck right now bar none if you want a modern semi-auto battle rifle. Been that way for a while now actually. If you're on a budget I see no reason not to buy one. 230$ for 1k of x39 or 180$ for 1k 7n6 5.45. The 7n6 is the real deal holyfield, although it is corrosive so clean your barrel asap.
