Congress has said to the effect that no public money can be used to keep any data base of gun owners or serial numbers of guns. Without some research, I can't quote, but it is a violation of the law. I've discussed this with the local NRA rep, but it is on the bottom of the list of things to oppose. The State Police are evidently keeping such a database in Illinois even after we are subjected to waiting periods and 'Gun Cards' that allready register the owners of guns...
...ans of course the most misuse of forearms in the State of Illinois are in Chicago and Cook County where guns are outlawed! >>
Hmmmm - I would be curious if such a law actually exists (though it may originate in some Supreme Court case that implicated the Second Amendment, rather than in a statute - this is the only way it would in fact have a constitutional, rather than statutory, basis). I have never heard of such a law but I guess it is possible, though any law that effectively restricts what a state can spend money on is likely on shaky constitutional ground itself. I would think if such a law existed, though, then Illinois' entire Firearm Owners' Identification Card requirement would also run afoul of it. I have to say I think it would be a Good Thing (capitalization intended) to have such a database, but I imagine most NRA types would beg to differ.
