Looks like Trump is pushing forward some measures of gun control, and I'm all for this. This is intelligent, logic-based thinking. Expand background checks, great idea. No assault weapons ban as that is a do-nothing feel good bs restriction that will only affect legal gun owners. They tried such a ban not long ago and it made zero difference whatsoever, a stupid idea pushed forward by stupid, ignorant people. But, background checks over time can possibly help and do not affect the rights of legal gun owners.

“I’m looking to do background checks. I think background checks are important,” Trump said. “I don’t want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people or people with rage or hate … I’m all in favor of it.”

now slow is pro background checks.

I have always been. I've even offered ideas on how I think private gun sales should be handled that include a background check. I have also always been against silly restrictions like magazine capacity limits, suppressor bans, folding stock bans, AR15 ban talks, etc. etc. I have been quite consistent with this.

Except those aren't all "silly"

Sounds like Trump is trying to take your guns. He's only going to impact law abiding citizens. Won't fix Chicago (which I'm to believe is actually a concern for you, haha), also won't impact criminals stealing guns from law abiding citizens. So pretty much just feel good stuff coming.

And lulz for linking Breitbart, srsly, haha.

Those are silly do nothing restrictions. You can probably count on the number of homicides where a suppressor played a role in a year on your fingers. Folding stock ban? L O L Magazines are so quick to change out, carrying multiple firearms is trivial, it will achieve nothing... not to mention, modifying a magazine to accept more ammo is extremely easy. These are silly restrictions that will not stop anything. When you have ideas for real solutions let me know, when you're talking about this type of silly bs you've lost the ear of reasonable gun owners on the whole because you're peddling garbage.

Ban all semi-auto handguns and rifles, there's no real need for them in hunting or self defense/home protection.

I think this is much more logically consistent than solely an AWB. Semi autos fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, rifle or pistol.

How can you believe anything from Trump's mouth, considering this:

Trump quietly used regulations to expand gun access

The president said he has taken tough action on guns. His administration has mostly focused on expanding gun access through little-noticed regulatory moves.
Federal agencies have implemented more than half a dozen policy changes — primarily through little-noticed regulatory moves — that expand access to guns by lifting firearms bans in certain locations and limiting the names in the national database designed to keep firearms away from dangerous people. The administration asked the Supreme Court to overturn New York City restrictions on transporting handguns outside homes. And it pushed to allow U.S. gunmakers to more easily sell firearms overseas, including the types used in mass shootings.

“This president has in a very intentional, sweeping way made it easier for people to access firearms, not more difficult,” said Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), a vice chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. “He’s systematically gone and undone all the protections that were put in place to try to limit the ability of dangerous people to access firearms.”

But those changes were narrow, lengthy and, in the case of the bump stock ban, could be reversed by the next president because it is not written into law.

William Vizzard, who spent nearly three decades at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, described the restrictions as modest. “On a scale of 1 to 100, they’re about a 2,” he said.

Before he ran for president, Trump supported several Democratic-backed proposals, including a ban on assault weapons and waiting period for firearm purchases. But after his inauguration, he made policy changes backed by the NRA. Most of them bypassed Congress, where firearms changes are difficult to pass.

“The response has largely parroted the talking points of the NRA,” said Chelsea Parsons, vice president of gun violence prevention at the left-leaning Center for American Progress.

Perhaps the most significant change is the revocation of a regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to buy guns. It had been enacted by Trump's Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, after the 2012 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that killed 26.

The Obama regulation had required the government to add those eligible for Social Security Administration mental disability payments to the national database and block them from buying guns. The Obama administration estimated it would have added 75,000 names to the database.

In addition, the Trump Justice Department narrowed the definition of “fugitive,” excluding people from being added to the national database and barred from buying a gun.

And let's not forget that Trump has, prior to his election as president, actually endorsed many gun control measures, such as expanded background checks. But since his election, the complete opposite has taken place. Maybe because he's now the NRA's bitch?

After a shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school in 2018 that killed 17 people, Trump publicly endorsed a host of gun-safety measures opposed by the gun-rights group, only to retreat following a private dinner with the organization’s leaders.

And despite his "maybe we'll look into background check expansion" crap he spewed in his visit to El Paso, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused so far to allow a vote on House-passed legislation that would expand background checks.

I think there's a "we'll see what happens", or a "we'll have something in the next two weeks" missing from that. Trump's version of vapor-ware.

Only dumb ass trump supporters buy trumps cheap talk.

To them, so long as trump makes promises, they don't care if he actually makes good on them let alone even makes an attempt to make good on them.

Meanwhile, they were quick to keep track of and point out any promise Obama made but didn't keep.

I really wish I had some sort of trinket or t-shirt I could sell to righties, such easy money!

Banning assault weapons has proven to be very successful in every other modern, developed nation on the planet that has done it.

'Background checks' is nothing more than a fig leaf. It does ah heck all, which is why the gun nuts pretend they have no problem with them.

Each of these shooters was a legal gun owner up until the moment they were shooting people in public. In general the transition from legal gun owner to illegal gun owner is instantaneous occurring at the time the crime is being committed. You're a legal gun owner until the second you are not.

Any attempt to try and curb illegal gun activities will have to affect legal gun owners in the forms of behavioral change or access to weaponry or something alongst those lines because we don't have "minority report*" type technology to identify "pre-thoughts" and pick up and convict people before they start shooting their loved ones in their private homes or strangers in random public catastrophies.
