Depends on the task(s) at hand and the clock speeds involved. The gap in performance per core between K10 and Nehalem isn't so great that a sufficiently multi-threaded workload wouldn't look better on the platform with slower cores in greater numbers.

HT Assist will also let AMD scale up to absurd numbers of cores better than they could before (not sure if this is a major advantage over Intel platforms but it certainly is an edge over older Opteron platforms).

Its simple, he doesn't break the NDA. He is an authorized (sanctioned) leak. Don't be so naive Aigo. History alone speaks for itself, you don't even have to be an industry insider to put two and two together on this one. Just ask Francois how far he got in his efforts to shutdown coolaler over Nehalem "leaks" a year ago. Yeah that effort got shot down real quick once someone "in the know" clued him into the behind the scenes deal with these "zomg I'm breaking teh NDA by releasing this info, but don't ask about xyz details cause even I have limits on not crossing the ethic's line..." lol, so obvious its just painful to watch the folks who can't see it.

Yea considering how competitive the 6 core AMD is to the 4 core Nehalem, the 12 core Magny Cours is definitely gonna outperform the 6 core Gulftown. There's always the 8 core monster Nehalem-EX or the successor 12-core Westmere-EX, but at least for Westmere, it'll be a year away from Magny Cours.
 
truly. Wonder how high it'll go on quality H20 24/7 stable. If it does hit 5Ghz, stable, on H2O...

We got nothing on gulftown yet. We can make some estimates based on scaling up Clarkdale cores/cache/QPI and borrowing 32nm IMC area size from Sandy dieshot...but outside of just fabricating such a Frankenstein cpu in photoshop we got nothing so far.
 
i think the whole idea of x58 is to be able to take in the 6core upgrade in the future, that was understood from the beginning. Gultown is the future upgrade path, i bet people will burn Intel down if gulftown require a new board. i wonder how far you can push a 6core considering the more you have, the harder to push the cores up. I think in the future there should be individual clockings on each core, so we can truthly get the max OC from a multi core cpu.

Isn't that what you can do with AMD cpu's already? Clock each cpu to its own multiplier?

And turbo does that automagically as well.
 
i imagine intel will allow at least two gulftown cores to hit 3.6 GHz under turbo boost, and maybe four cores will do 2.8, but with all six loaded iirc it's going to be 2.40.
 
Looks cool. By the looks of it, the 32 nm process helps with ocing, even hindered by a lower multi. I didn't know that these boards supported such high BCLKs, or was this done due to the bios update? BTW, anyone know what the highest BCLK is generally on a gigabyte board like the UD5? I hope this CPU works with my board, if not, I will wait until later and make sure to get a hydra chip board with it. Hopefully they will have no trouble with high BLCKs.
 
ya, but the gulf town isnt for p55. Werent those 250 or so BLCK oc's for the gulftowns on x58 boards? Or were they on something newer, something else 😱 ?
 
they were X58. 250 bclk with X58 is possible but you really have to be good with voltages and you'll probably need to up the pcie clk.
 
ah, plus I see that it was on a classified. That might help 😀
