I only buy axes that feel right to me and have a good overall tonal balance. This whole quality downfall controversy has been going on since the begiining of time. This is something not to pay attention to. I have seen the all top makers through all the changing production lines put out some dogs.

well both of those are quality guitars. i personally wouldn't play them because A: i prefer 25" scale necks. B: i need some relatively light so i can rock out properly. C: my favorite pickup is a single-coil sized humbucker. but those are all personal preference things. no one could say either of those guitars suck, and i'm sure you're gonna be really happy with the PRS you bought. :)

Single coil sized humbucker? WTF?

Aren't humbuckers by definition double coils, with one wired in reverse and 180 degrees out of phase?

yeah, they still have two coils, but they are just really skinny so that they fit into the same slot as a standard single coil. seymour duncan makes a number of pickups with this setup. they are designed to be drop-in replacements for stratocasters and telecasters. i don't think it has anything to do with it being smaller, but it just so happens that the Hot Rails pickup is my favorite pickup. Luckily strats are also one of my favorite guitars, so the two go nicely together.

Honestly, you should get an Epiphone Trailer Park Troubadour Airscreamer or a Star Wars Fernandes.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul (with a lot of gibson hardware... pickups etc). It's a great guitar, sounds awesome, plays great etc. It is heavy, but the sound is worth it.

Honestly though I'd probably go with a new PRS over a new Gibson right now. I've seen and played the new Gibsons and while they sound great, the wood just doesn't seem as good as it used to be. Hell, my $800 Epi has a nicer top than the $3500 Gibson Standard Plus they had in the store the day I picked mine up. I played them one after the other, and neither I, nor any of the guys in the shop could tell the difference in sound (this was after my pickup install).

Of course, if I could get a vintage les paul or a custom built one, I'd take that over pretty much anything.

I've got an Epi LP Custom that I'm in the process right now of polishing all the gold off the hardware to the chrome underneath, since the gold was coming off pretty bad on some parts and looked bad. A big PITA. A few parts I polished too far and will have to buy, plus maybe all the screws. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known it would rub off. I also have some SD pickups to put in it when I'm done.

Anyone tried a (Ernie Ball) Music Man Luke?

I've owned Gibson, Fender and Ibanez (RG GRX series). I'm partial to Ibanez. My favorite technician (Joe Satriani) is also Ibanez. Next Jan after my profit sharing payout, I'm going to buy a JS2000. Fo' shizzle!

you might also want to play the Ernie Ball John Petrucci model guitar. I love PRS, don't care for Gibson's any more, and have owned quite a few other guitars. My vote goes for a carvin, otherwise the Ernie Ball JP model. Those are the best playing guitars that I know. You may want to swap pickups to customize your tone, but the guitar itself, both carvin and ernie JP, are so frickin smooth and easy to play, and feel just as comfortable.

Guitar Center usually has a Ernie JP on hand, while the carvin's are mail order only.

Nice. I tried a JS1000 briefly at the store, but would like to in the comfort of my home. And the Luke I mentioned. And a Suhr Reb Beach signature. :) Link. Link. Link. More info from John Suhr.
Reb used to play Ibanez. If you're partial to Ibanez, did you ever play his signature Ibanez?
BTW, there's a Suhr that Reb owned on ebay right now.

Anyone else dealt with gold finish rubbing off the hardware?
