I was just on Fileshack and they claimed that Guild Wars has sold over 1 million copies. Wow, i'm impressed. I didn't really like the game, but i'm still impressed.

I think it's the promise of playing an MMO for free that gets people... of course, it's not really an MMO

I guess it's because it's free for online play, people like it and spread the word.
But I do know of a few people who don't play much anymore, even though they used to be quite big fans.

Bought it at launch, played it for 3 weeks, ran out of content and got bored, went back to everquest, gave it to one of my friend's 7 year old brother, and he has played it ever since.

No way you played all the content in 3 weeks..maybe you didn't like the content you played, but it's impossible you did everything there is to do in 3 weeks.

I've been playing since the launch, and there is lots of stuff I haven't done. Not that I play 12 hours a day though ! :)

They've also added content along the way, and I'm sure they will continue to do so.

On the other hand, I've played Everquest and WoW to a small extent; I'm sure there is something that appeals to people in those games, but I don't think either is worth spending $100s per year to play, or even are as good as many games that don't require a monthly fee.

Including Guild Wars, which is an interesting combo of rpg/squad sized tactical strategy, and is beautiful to look at.

Not possible in 3 weeks? Sure it is. It took me less than 120 hours to go through every quest. People just doing the main quests can probably finish in less than 100 hours. Of course that means you're putting in 5-6 hours per day.

I thought the main point of Guild Wars was PvP and I can't comprehend running out of content there. :p It's like running out of content on an FPS.

It is much easier to get bored of stat based PvP than it is to get bored of skill based PvP. Skill based has no limits, there is always a chance of someone being better than you and not playing for a week will make you worse.

I really enjoyed GW's combat system. However, the game itself left much to be desired. I am not sure if it was the 12 year olds running around with a naked toon dancing, or if it was the lack of respect the majority of the userbase had. Not to mention all the spam and the lack of a real MMO feel.

If there is one thing I do really love, it is the combat system. It seems pretty well balanced and I think a lot of online MMO's could learn a lot from that. With that said, the game is boring. I played it for about 3 days until I had my fill.

I am impressed that they have sold a million copies, the game has done well. But I still do not think that is how the future will go. If you pay a monthly fee, there stands a greater chance of better quality control. Just like TV and origional Cable (old cable without comercials) there will be a difference between a free MMO and one that you pay for.

Just my opinion.

Never understood this argument. I don't think it's unreasonable to picture a dedicated gamer who doesn't play MMOs picking up a new game every 1-2 months. If a different gamer gets his rocks off playing WoW, etc for the most part, he comes out ahead in money spent (assuming he doesn't buy a lot of standalone titles too).

Sorry, for an even halfway serious gamer, $15 per month really isn't much, not compared with all the other expenses that go into it. Not that subscription fees shouldn't be factored in, but it cracks me up to see guys buying new med-to-high-end vid cards yearly (maybe even SLI), powerful CPUs, OCing gear, new release titles etc acting as if $15 is an unheard of price for gaming.

I played it for about a week and that was it. 15 bucks on online games really isn't much. My work pays for my phone line and DSL connection, so I figure with 15 bucks and still way ahead of the curve. My satellite costs over 40 dollars a months and I barely watch TNT for Law & Order.

Guild wars is for guild wars :) If you play the game for PvP, then you'll never get tired of it, although it can be played like a single player/cooperative RPG and can give you more gameplay time than many other american-made RPGs (fable for example).

I think if they sold the game as an RPG instead of an MMORPG, then people won't be so pissed at it when they finish the game in three weeks.

What it is really is a semi-diablo clone, but in 3d, and with a more extensive PvP system.

I've still got my copy and am waiting for the expansion pack :)

I know exactly what made GW boring. It was the fact that all of the initial quests are fetch quests across 3-4 zones. Extremely trivial quests that require lots and lots of traveling across zones filled with very trivial battles.

I knew this the second I started playing because I compared it to my experiences with the game in the global preview. During the global preview, I had much more fun as we started out at level 15 I believe and went directly into very fun instanced quests with little trivial fetching bullcrap.

There's your problem right there. Why, I bet you even want to have a girlfriend some day and live in your own apartment too.
