Guild Wars Good?

I was thinking about giving Guild Wars a shot but I've never played that type of game before. I enjoy some RPG's though(mostly on consoles). I been a fan of FPS'ers for many years though.

Don't think games with accounts aren't allowed to be sold on here because the developers don't allow it.

IIRC, the way it works is that you sell the game (ie, discs, manuals, etc.) and the account comes with it (but you're not paying for the account, technically).

I'm not sure how it works with GW because you aren't paying by the month to play on the account.

Its kinda ironic that so many devs try to discourage the selling of accounts. If an individual goes and buys the retail box for an MMO, plays for a few months, gets bored and stops playing. He/she is going to cancel their account and let the MMO gather dust on the shelf. The company that made the MMO isn't gaining any profit then. Then, there's another individual who doesn't want to go spend the 50 bucks to buy the game at retail because their uncertain how much they'll like the game. So they give some money to the person who bought the game for his account, and reactivate it, sending the company 15 bucks of month in income. Kinda of a win-win situation, you would think, because the second person would never have bought the game in the first place. It would have to boil down to sheer greed, in the fact that the publisher wants people to spend 50 on the retail box and 15/month to play.

The way it works is sale of Guild Wars accounts (and others like Steam) are forbidden on AT FS/FT. 🙂

Hard to tell if you'd like it. I own it but havent played it much in many months. I was kinda pissed that my stupid lvl 6 char sucked and I didnt like the fact there was tons of different quests meaning it was near impossible to find like-people to party with and quest with. But my friend got up to two level 20 characters in a month or two of coming over to play on my computer, so he didnt seem to ever have a problem with finding a group to quest with. Other than the questing/group problem I personally had, the game was great.

But yeah its BS the game is still $50! I was in Walmart yesterday browsing some games and and noticed BF2 and GW were both still $50. I would imagine GW Factions would be the better buy since it is $50 as well. A little more than a year ago I remember going to Walmart with my brother. I bought GW for $50 and he bought BF2 for $50. All this time, they are still $50!! Then there's games like Quake 4 which are only half as old but it was already down to $30.

GW is great. my friends baught it and loved it. you pay one and there are no monthly fees. however, the max lvl is 20 which is kind of low and limits the game. but the graphics rock and the gameplay is great.

Guild Wars is $35 shipped from amazon.

I've played it since it came out and like it a lot. There's plenty to do, and a vast world, without feeling pressured to get my money's worth out of a montlhy fee game.

I find the variety of skills and characters gives more of an rpg feel than games that rely more on weapons and armor to create a unique character. But there are tons of items and armors in GW too.

Being the resident antiGuildWars Zealot, I feel the need to post in a thread like this.

Ok game, but like so many other online roleplaying games, the community ruins it. If you liked diablo II style multiplayer have at it. If you have some friends that will play it with you, all the better, but dont expect much in the way of PUGs in this (or any online RPG for that matter). I wish that there were some online RPGs that had great communities. The best community thus far has been on the RPG servers (non pvp) in EQ2, but it is not what it used to be. But, I am sticking to single player RPGs for now. Have not played any online RPGs (or MMORPGS) for about 4 months now.

what happened to nwn, schadenfroh?😉

anyway, i started a bg2 game again.. i just arrived at spellhold. it's great though- i have lvl 7 spells on my mage and 2 priests(me, anomen, viconia). then i have minsc, keldorn, and valygar. i'm kickin a$$ so far. i just wish i had a thief to pick locks/disarm traps🙁

During the year I've played Guild Wars, I mainly have played it as a single player game, using hireable computer controlled partners to create my own "group".

I find playing it this way to be almost as good as Baldur's Gate, my favorite rpg, and considerably more interesting than Diablo 2.

And the occasional foray into unorganized pvp, and pve pugs, can also be entertaining, if one isn't bothered by less than perfect results.
😉

I'm an admitted GW addict. I've even met some anandtechers online before.

I can also vouch for some of the problems with finding like-minded people for pick-up groups. As there really isn't an age-limit, you'll run into plenty of immature kids and out-right a-holes; but can anyone say that is unique to GW? No. Once you find a good group of friends, it can become really fun; esp if you have a good guild. Of course, there are tons of great people online too--you just have to find them.

Plus, I prefer their model to any other online game. The reason the original game (Prophecies) is still rather expensive is b/c there are no monthly fees. Rather than charge a monthly fee, Arena net is commited to releasing a full, stand-alone component every 6 months--every 6 freaking months! I prefer this to the monthly fee, get a patch once per year or so. Factions was released 1 year later, and now Nightfall will be 6 months after Factions. The key is that these are stand-alone--no need to buy any others to play one of them. And it looks like each new game will come with 2 brand new character classes.

After the recent worldwide free-preview of Nightfall (2 weekends back), it seems clear to me that Arenanet is doing a lot to improve GW overall; esp in combating the problems with certain pugs (Nightfall will offer customizable heroes that you can control; making them much more effective than henchmen and allowing you to quest alone more effeciently if you can't find a good group)

I don't find the level 20 cap a problem. It evens things out such that anyone, no matter how late they start playing, has the potential to be as good as anyone else. Plus, you can customize your characters whenever you want; so you aren't stuck (as in morrowind and others) with a crappy build b/c of earlier mistakes. I'm thinking this might be the only game I play from now on, as I really don't have time for much else and Arena net has been quite good at keeping things fresh with GW.

I used to be addicted to Guild Wars. I got it when it first came out and played it for hours on end. I stopped playing a few months after I finished all the quests. This was a long time ago and they've since added numerous new quests, but I'm afraid if I log back in I won't be able to stop 😱

OTOH, I tried WoW for two weeks.. did not like it at all.

Well I logged in to make sure everything was still there since it's been a while.. still got:
Level 20 Warrior/Ranger (first and favorite character, practically invincible)
Level 17 Monk/Elementalist (everyone always wanted me in their group with this guy!)
Level 13 Ranger/Necromancer

Must... resist.... urge... to PLAY!! ARGHG!!!!

If you're a good Mo/Mes, you become quite popular!
My original, Zinfamous, is also a W/R...which I love. but I mostly have him as W/Mo these days (much better for farming..and even more invincible!)

My addiction started slow, and was mainly due to joining the kick-ass guild that I am in right now. I now have 5 lvl 20s and 1 lvl 15 assasin on her way (my dervish is locked until nightfall comes out...)

With factions, leveling is way too easy, but helpful for your prohecies characters. For all those curious, I would have to say that Prophecies (the original) is much better; as factions is poorly balanced and very tedious at times.

Feel free to PM me supa; I'll help drag you back to the dark side! hehe.

Oh, hehe. Indeed, the lack of jumping is usually what will turn me off of a game, too...lol

Actually, one really annoying thing is that much af the terrain is locked. You can't climb over mountains and certain hills (a'la Morrowind--Never played Oblivion and I'm not sure if I will--I hated putting points into lame-ass stats like my ability to "smile" or handle plants or whatever all that crap was...), so you can often get stuck on objects and have to spend some time freeing yourself. Quite obnoxious, really.

i bought the game when it first came out. i got to lvl 7 then got bored. but now a year later i really got into it and im lvl 17 and im really liking it. it's great when you find some good people to quest with, especially with the missions that you find the bonus's for and such. i've really gotten into it. maybe the updates made it better but i've really gotten into it. and how the hell do you explore the whole map and get a title, IT'S SO DAMN HUGE!!!!

so if someone wanted to start playing guild wars today, what should they buy? the original version or the factions version or do you have to have the original to use factions?

It's actually not that hard to get up to 98%. Getting up to 99% is a little more difficult and finding out where the last 1% is and uncovering it is what really sucks. The fun part about the cartography titles is that there are a lot of places (especially in Prophecies) that you probably would not have known about if you weren't trying to uncover all of the map.

You don't need one of them in order to play the other. Each game is designed to be a standalone game. I'd recommend buying the original (Prophecies) if you're just starting, but if you want to reach max level (which is 20) quickly and play a lot of higher level content, then Factions would be the way to go as most of it is designed for level 20 characters.
