I've been using Kaspersky for awhile and my system resource does take a hit. However, I think it's a valid tradeoff for their great detection rate. One complaint about KAV is very slow scan rate.

I agree on the resources issue and it does lagg my system. I disable the auto-protect and just schedule a weekly scan.

I was thinking about getting Kaspersky. What version would be good for home use because there's like three different personal ones haha. If you turn off auto-protect and just do a weekly scan it won't use any system resources right?

BUMP! I'd like to hear the answer to the above question..

I too am looking at Kapersky, and supposedly the Pro version is less of a resource hog than the regular version. Of course it's about twice the price, but perhaps it's worth it.

As for the firewall roundup, I just heard of Outpost yesterday and it seems to be far and away better than the rest. Is it seldom recommended here at Anandtech because it's not free?

And is there a thread on good routers? I know nothing about them, but would like to pick one up.

You'll still have the kav.exe (tray icon) and kavsvc service running, but they use less than 2.5MB of memory. I purchased the Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal 5.0 since I didn't need the other utilities in the security suite. I have been thoroughly pleased with the purchase, and for $35 you've got the best AV on the market.

So does anybody have a router to recommend? I only have one computer, and I don't need anything wireless. I just want a hardware firewall that isn't going to break my wallet. It'd be awesome if I could even get it at Walmart, but I'll go to Newegg if I need to.

What's so good about that firmware?
More features, and more robust use and control of said features.
Several differences, chiefest being the wireless standard (.11b v .11g), and the actual internal specifications (read here for more information).

Also, the alternate third-party firmwares mentioned are restricted in general to either the WRT54G or WRT54GS models.

I use Karpseky 5.0 Personal as my antivirus and I'm very pleased.
I have Kerio as firewall but I was thinking of purchasing Karpesky's Anti-hacker.
Has anyone have any idea of this firewall ?? Thanks

I see. Well I want it strictly for firewall purposes. I don't want a router, I don't want a wireless router, and I don't want anything to do with routers heh. I only have one computer, so I don't need them. I do however want a hardware firewall, and a router seems to be the best option that I'm aware of.

So aside from the differences you listed, are they the same firewall-wise? Because that's all that matters to me. I'm not even gonna use the wireless feature. I'm gonna use a cable.

Bump and up 4 my question..
Why's this removed from sticky anyway?

I just installed AntiVir on one of my PCs, and it seems to work pretty well. I used to use Norton System Works, and although it was easy to use, it was more stressful on the resources.

Is there a similar free program to the "one button checkup" in NSW?

Also, are there any good guides for setting up AntiVir? I'd like to know if most people keep the AnitVir guard and the Scheduler running at all times (I was trying to avoid the scheduler to save on resources), and I'd also like to recommend AntiVir to some of my friends, but it doesn't seem as (new)user-friendly than Norton or McAfee.

Thanks!

Well, a lot of discussion on which is the best absolute Antivirus, which many agree to be Kaspersky. However, it seems to be quite the resource hog. Is there one that isn't that much of a resource hog but yet has good AV detection, and preferably also has a firewall built in? How's PC-Cillin Internet Security, F-Secure Internet Security and ZA Security Suite?

I have AntiVir, but I'm in the process of getting another AV program. AntiVir does not have email scanning.

Edit: The free program doesn't have email scanning.

I was thinking about PC-Cillin's Internet Security, but it's a bundled package. I already have a firewall (ZoneAlarm) and anti-spyware (MS Antispyware and Trojan Horse), so I didn't need the extra products. PC-Cillin v.11 is an AV program that you can buy from Newegg or BestBuy. Trend Micro still supports it but, of course, they're pushing their new "suite" program.

Do any of the other free programs have e-mail scanning? I'm not too worried about that, cause my MSN mail (part of Verizon DSL) has a pretty decent e-mail scanner.

I was more interestred in the system maintenance part of NSW (if there is a free version).
