I found that Kaspersky is slow!
Frankly, I would take that as a sign it's also effective. You'd hardly believe the impact of a fully-armed VirusScan Enterprise 8.0i installation. I was doing a little test... you can view the results in this little video clip: link to video clip

The test system is a 566MHz Celeron2 with 256MB RAM and Windows2000. Before the antivirus software was installed, launching Firefox after a cold boot took about 8 seconds. Afterwards... well, you can see for yourselves, I think 😉 Sorry for the low resolution, I am nearly out of webspace or I could've done 320x240.

One of the points of that video clip was that IE launches fairly quickly even with the antivirus software installed and configured, which makes sense since it's native to the OS.

But I digress... c'mon mods, make Schadenfroh Elite already! 😛

Schadenfroh, you do have one lil' typo where I think you meant to say Should I run 2 or more realtime firewall products for extra protection?. You might clarify it to mean firewall software since a router + firewall could sort of be two firewalls. Anyway, nice job 🙂

BTW that video clip nicely illustrates why I'm exasperated at people who think that business users don't have a use for powerful CPUS. "Oh, a Celeron will be just fine. After all, it's only a business desktop."

😛 ~ gimme my A64, thanks

thats what i mean, thanks for pointing it out, that will clarify it. we run a software firewall with a hardware router firewall.

Based on this very nicely put together thread I decided to give AVG Free Edition the boot and installed AntiVIR instead...

All appeared to be going very well indeed but little did I know that it caused my DVD playback to be unusable (choppy) using 100% CPU....

I've just uninstalled AntiVIR and my DVD playback is as smooth as silk once more 🙂
(50% CPU)

If you are having DVD playback problems just remember this 😉

AVG Free Edition.... all is forgiven 😱

This is an excellent post. That AV-Comparatives site does a great job of reviewing some of the better AV products out there. I'm in the market for a good AV and it looks like Kaspersky is at the top of my list so far. I'll have to do a little price shopping but I'm willing to pay a little extra for better security. What do you guys think?

I was strongly considering NOD32 but after checking out the info at AV-Comparatives, I'm not so sure anymore. I have used Kaspersky before and was pretty satisfied with it. Too many choices :/

I just got a notice from ZA Pro 4 that is has expired, but before I renewed I decided to take a peek at what the Anandtech community recommends. I am glad I did! It has been a long time since I have done any research on Firewalls and AV software, and it appears as though some things have changed. 2 years ago both Norton and ZA were the top recommendations, but judging from your research and results, it looks like there are better options out there at a much cheaper price (FREE!).

Thanks for the great thread. This really needs to be stickied. 😉

Good news for Cox internet subscribers: Cox now offers free antivirus software to it's users. It's based on F-Prot, FWIW.

Any info/opinions on F-secure?

I did not recall seeing it as one of the programs tested, but it may be under a different name, so I thoguht I'd ask.

Thanks.

I'll most likely be using Antivir and the Windows Firewall for a small computer lab i'm setting up.
Note that the license agreement for the free version states
This free AntiVir Personal Edition is intended exclusively for private use on a single workstation. You may copy the complete program package and pass it on to others for private use only.

The free AntiVir Personal Edition may not be used for commercial or professional purposes.
in case that's relevant to your situation there. Depending on your users and how cooperative they are, you might be wanting something you can password-protect so they can't disarm it, too.

Interesting, I thought Antivir was free for all non-commercial use (this lab is for a non-profit organization). Looks like I'll be dropping back to my second choice of $15 OEM Virusscan Home 9.0.

AVG wins it with me. It's so easy to use, updates easily, and you can even get the free download without registration until you actually install it!!

Just go here, scroll down and download it:

Download AVG

good info here

ill give my nod to Kaspersky as erll, i installed it after norton sub ran out it found 2 virii on its first scan, i had a friend install it as well, he was running norton 2005, norton said he was clean, Kaspersky found 44 virii on his comp, pretty much fixed the issues he was having also

Kerio is also great, ive been useing it for a long time, if you pay for it you get "Web Filtering" which give you add blocking, soo nice, it also blocks some annoying popups that get through FF and Opera
