I see a large Heatsink installation in your future (top left of picture) :).

I wonder what it would take to put the HSF from a 7800GTX/7900GTX on an x1900. Ya gotta think they're cheaper than any of the ones you can buy from other manufacturers since they're produced in large quantities... and they're damn good... cool and quiet.

Well with the stock cooler at 100% (yeah loud but not nearly as loud as I have heard other describe it) I'm getting getting load temps of Idle temps of 43C and Load temps of 70C @ 700/1620 with 1.425v GPU. Impressed so far with Oblivion performance as I'm getting playable frame rates @ 1680x1050 with 0AA/16xAF (tried 2xAA @ 1440x900 and looks great as well but I prefer higher res with Oblivion) Definitely performing better than my 7900GT @ 700/1800 did in Oblivion (pretty much not playable outdoors with high driver settings with 16xAF @ 1680x1050)

Got almost 12K in 3DMark05 with it at 700/1620 and gonna do a few tests before taking it out and slapping on my VF1. Hopefully I can OC it above 700 with my VF1 on it. :D

Weird initial results with the VF1 installed. Getting 70C idle in Windows! So I shut it down and took off the cooler to check for contact. Contact looked pretty good, so it leads me to wonder just what's going on. I've reseated it and reapplied an even thinner layer of AS5. I'll see how it turns out this time.

EDIT: Well looks like the VF1 isn't quite so good from results I've gotten so far. Temps going above 75C in ATI Tool artifact scanning . . . the stock cooler @ 100% seems to be better. Looks an Accelero is gonna be in my future . . .

EDIT: Now loading in the 90s?? Don't know what the heck is going on.

The stock cooler cools just fine. My load temps are around 80C and the fan never spins up near 100% and never gets annoyingly loud. It also exhausts the heat right out of the case. You bought a card with a lifetime warranty, it just doesn't make sense to me to worry about lowering the temps 10-15C with the added expense of an aftermarket cooler.

Did you note the convex screws on the VF1? Page 5 of the Toms review shows what I'm talking about. This might be your problem. It seems the convex screw raises the contact on the heatsink and doesn't allow it to touch the GPU core on X1800 and X1900's. I've read multiple accounts of this, you either have to grind down the head of the screw or find a flat head screw with the same threading.

That problem was already fixed. My VF1 shipped with the flat screws. I've already checked for contact and it's good. I'm wondering now if my temp probe is just inaccurate because I'm getting sudden spikes to 75C just by having Oblivion open at the main menu!

EDIT: I'm getting idle temps of 45-46C and load temps over 100C! I'm definitely thinking that there's something wrong with the sensor. I played Oblivion for thirty minutes without artifacting or anything @ 700/1800 . . . but my load temps went up to 105C. This makes no sense.

70C max load. I'm installing the latest drivers (uninstalled the chuck patch) and seeing if it's a bad temperature reading . . .

UPDATE: Well loads are now in the 90s instead of the 100s after I updated the drivers. Sigh, I'm gonna put the stock cooler back on . . .

Are the X1900s much hotter than the X1800s? Because I don't understand how people are getting 50C loads with the VF1 mounted on X1800XTs . . .

Also I noticed a few scratches on the VF1 surface . . . would this affect temps much?

Maybe it's defective? There is no way a properly installed, working VF-1 is worse than stock.

I had installed it Wednesday night on my 7900GT and temps were VERY good (47C under load)

Dunno. I'm back on stock now, gonna check to see if temps are still messed up.

Doesn't make sense to me either, the VF1 has heatpipes, a larger span, no to mention that fan pushes some serious CFMs . . . sigh . . .

A few scratches wouldn't bring your temps up so high. Have you considered trying this cooler out, this guy seems to have gotten really good results: http://myweb.cableone.net/lreedy/computer/X19V1U_4.html

You can buy it here if you're interested: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/thv1ulvgaco.html

Personally if I were going to use air cooling this is the cooler I'd go for.

Yes. 384 million transistors against 320~ of the X1800XT.
The R580 die is bigger too, so that could explain why these cards get really hot.

Yeah I was considering the V1 Ultra as well but I saw great reviews on the VF1 and saw other users get great results with it so I decided to get the VF1. And it DID cool my volt-modded 7900GT REALLY well, but doesn't seem to work so great with my X1900XT.

BTW, stock heatsink back on and even with the dynamic fan, load temps are going much above 71-72C. Definitey not a sensor problem.

Oh well, I'll probably just sell this and get the V1 Ultra or Accelero X2 . . .

I haven't heard too many good things about the Accelero X2 so if you decide to replace this with another cooler, definitely give that V1 Ultra a try.

the accelero X2 is as efficient as the stock cooler but extremely quiet. It seems that no cooler does a sufficient enough job on the x1900 cards, though

::SIGH::

I may have to mod a 7900 GTX cooler to fit on my x1900 ;-)

Just found this thread but, you had to have had a problem somewhere. I have the VF1 Plus on my X1800XL and the idle temps. as I type are 32C and the top load temps. I've seen after 3 consecutive passes of 3DMark06 are 47C. Stock cooler idle temps. were higher/about the same as my load temps. are now..........
