I don't know if the gtx 580 is a smokescreen (lol), but Wizard got two to test 580 SLI !

Hey guys, maybe I missed it in the article or thread, but why does the 580 have less transistors than the 480? Did they remove some GPGPU stuff like some people had speculated? (Forgive me if that is an ignorant question)

If we assume it's 2x 470 clocked down to fit into power/thermal envelope - I bet it is - it's pretty obvious it won't be faster than 5970, rather match it, best case scenario...

...until 6970/6990 arrives next week, of course.

I have to agree with Charlie here, it's mostly a showoff for the investor call, it's probably way more expensive to make than even a GTX480. We'll have to see the availability first - if it's low then it's just a smokescreen.

If they already have a better performing Fermi chip ie: GF110, why would they use GF100 for Dual GPU?, the GF110 has better performance, power consumption and thermals....
I would say if they bring on a Dual card, it would be the slower model of the GF110, perhaps 570x2!

Wow, 2X fermi smokes the 5970 (again). 2X 580 is an absolute beast!

LOL @ "smokescreen" comment. This sub-forum never ceases to provide the comedy.

Furmark is useless, and their Crysis test does not give me what I want in the average.

What average?

Do you think Crysis will be consuming more power when it gives more or less frame rates?

Sure you can reduce power consumption of a card by limiting the frame rate, but otherwise the card will just burn the same powerin a given game - sometimes it will give more performance then the other but it is using the same power.

Just look at the problems SC2 menus used to give - it would load the card full even though all of those cards could easily render those menus at much lower power consumption.

I was assuming 2 fully clocked gtx570's

Same thing. NV's naming convention doesn't mean crap, they have no morals, they will manipulate and lie at will, as their bttom line dictates it at any given moment.

(as fast as a gtx 480 each)

With less trannies? Unlikely.

to compete with a 6990 dual card in December. 6970 and 6950's are next week correct?

How would I know? ;)

Well, the comedy gold in this topic is so far this one:

I just spit back my coffee when I read this one - it's downright gold, I have to admit.

You can try and derail every 580 thread, but it isn't going to stop the cards from being released. ;)

Seems like some sour-grapes and/or damage control taking place here.

Shouldn't it? 2xGTX480's were already faster... isn't a single GTX580 about the same cost as a 5970? I think the real answers will be 2xCayman vs. 2xGTX580's.

If anything, the GF110 is illustrating to me how 'broken' the GF100 is, how rushed it was. Here they have a faster clocked part with more enabled units using less power with otherwise similar specs and bulit on the same process. I felt the GTX480 was rushed before, now it is really in perspective. The GTX580 looks to be much more well rounded.

5990? Do you mean 5970? No those were $700 at launch.

6990? I highly doubt those are going to be $500 based on the 5970s prices.

Awesome... you're talking about damage control when NV, following a successful AMD announcement including an upcoming 69xx-series, out of the blue releases some gutted, lower-tranny dual-chip card? :D

Thread-derail and thread-crapping is not acceptable.

Bingo. If it's smaller then it's the admission their original architecture (Fermi) is a complete hackjob. If it isn't it's even worse because that means they shouldn't have released it at all... :D

^ Yes, you Zoners try and form the conversation so that no matter what nV does, it is a failure!

Luckily most sane people see through this, which is why your normal backers are staying out of this one. You are the lone gunman ;)

LOL @ "less-trannies."

Tsk-tsk-tsk, now you're making adhom accusations... not the best approach in these mod-heavy topics...

Seems like some sour-grapes and/or damage control taking place here.

And it is being countered with 2 line posts, a prolific use of emoticons, and a hype machine to boot.

I think the GTX580 brought exactly what it was supposed to bring to the table, especially after that PDX LAN advertisement: more reasonable noise, better performance and at a decent price. I'm looking forward to the 6970 release to see if it can create another pricing battle between the two, though I suppose that's unlikely as they are such new parts.

Also, the 5970 was available in the low $600 range at launch, even though there was also no competition for it at the time. Can you blame AMD for gouging? I don't. But the scenario now, a year later, is much better. Ideally, 580 vs 6970 and a dual Fermi (if possible) against the 6990 at Christmas. Here's hoping.

More people on these forums need to learn to stop feeding the trolls. It would also be refreshing to see stricter moderation with regards to trolling and PR marketing posts.

Sorry, typo. Yea, I meant the 5970.

I also doubt the 6990 will be $500, unless the Nvidia x2 part is faster or cheaper at the same speed.

Back OT, Nvidia did a good job with this release. I am happy as a consumer to see some competition.. which eventually drive down prices.

Exactly the reason I'm actually happy to see some valid competitor from Nvidia after all these months... cheaper 6990 FTW! :)

The noise levels are impressively low.

I just hope that thermal limiting doesn't impact games (or even better, can be disabled).
