GTX480 only 5% faster than a 5870?

We will see. There is too much speculation floating around right now.

On paper it should be substantially faster than a 5870, but there are a million other factors that could hold it back as well.

I am glad to see Fermi has very high tessellation capabilities.

Tessellation is what seems to make DX11 graphics really stand out from DX 10.1. (according to the Unigine demonstration)

Nvidia would have to screw up really bad for the GTX 480 to be only 5% faster than the 5870. The 5870 is what, 30% faster than the GTX 285? The GTX 480 has over twice the SPs and a slightly slower core clock, so unless Nvidia managed to drop the SP performance/clock by about 50% it should be much faster :hmm:

Hopefully this is true, I expect tessellation and Physx performance to be top notch on the GTX 480/470s, but the rest should be fairly similar to the radeons...

I don't think that tessellation will be a big issue. The way I see it right now ATI has 100% of the DX11 install base. Even if Fermi launches tomorrow the lack of mid range and lower end parts (and the limited supply) means that ATI will have >90% of the DX11 user base at the end of the year.

The way I see it most game developers are not going to shoot themselves in the foot by doing something that might limit their potential buyers.

Bad news for people expecting a price cut on the HD5000 series. If this is true it isn't going to happen anytime soon. Not until ATI's next refresh. On the other hand, it makes me glad I purchased a 5870 and 5970 at launch instead of waiting ;)

nice message at the end of the article:

File under Microprocessors and Graphics and Channel and Reviews and Humor and Desktop and Gaming

:):):)

of course, if charlie is right then most of us won't be smiling at all because we'll be paying sky high prices for a while longer...:|

it doesn't matter, anyway. according to toyota, you need a 7.2 ghz i7 to run a 5850 anyway, so all of us should just wait a few years...

lmfao!

In any event, good luck getting hold of Fermi at anything approaching recommended retail pricing come launch or indeed any time soon, with JHH himself saying that:

“Q2 [of FY 2011] is going to be the quarter when Fermi is hitting the full stride. It will not just be one Fermi product, there will be a couple of Fermi products to span many different price ranges, but also the Fermi products will span GeForce Quadro and Tesla. So, we are going to be ramping now on Fermi architecture products through Q2 and we are building a lot of it. I am really excited about the upcoming launch of Fermi and I think it will more than offset the seasonality that we usually see in Q2,”

I don't being to understand your financial year calendar, but apparently: 'Nvidia’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011 began on the 31st of January, 2010, and will likely end on the 30th of April, 2010; the Q2 of FY 2011 will last from May till late July, 2010.'

This is like the same article when the 2900xt was going to drop. and it was dead on. So keep an open mind and not bash it with " another charlie article" . It could be true.

Tessellation is scalable though, so a developer would not be shooting themselves in the foot especially since the 5x00 series can do tessellation.

you just never give up with your ridiculous flamebait crap do you?

back on topic. I doubt this is true but if it is then I am sure they will price the cards accordingly. the downside for consumers will of course be the higher power usage just to barely beat the 5870.

Until I see unbiased reviews, I refuse to believe the gtx480 is only 5% faster than a 5870 in current games.

I'm waiting until Anandtech does a review for it. They seem to be one of the few reviewers left that don't let the manufacturers sway them into better reviews.

Well now hes just bullshitting, just the other day he said:

For those not interested in the 'why' side of things, the short answer is that the top bin as it stands now is about 600MHz for the half hot clock, and 1200MHz for the hot clock, and the initial top part will have 448 shaders.

Now he says:

There are two cards, the GTX480 having the full complement of 512 shaders, and the GTX470 with only 448, which is 64 less for the math impaired.

Really consistent lol

Alright I'm not sure how many Anandtechers have read HardwareCanucks's online review and benchmark of the GF100 (Fermi), but they conducted some benchmarks in January on Nvidia's March shipping cards (possible Gtx480)...I just found this link and the results are mind blowing: In Far Cry 2 Fermi dominates by about 20 more fps than a 5870, in Dark Void the difference is roughly 30 fps....

I have a feeling assuming this card was their high end card (GTX480), then it beats the 5870 and either equals or is about 5% slower than a 5970....
