Given the two 1GB models are generally +/- 3% performance delta, the only reason to get one over the other at this point are price and/or thermal concerns.

Ill eat my words, I was being stupid. I just hate that card with a passion.

you made us do all this bickering and in the end you are playing at lowly 1440x900? lol. yeah a 9800gt should still be decent enough for that.

Well, my 4850 was starting to feel too slow for 1680x1050, so I can imagine a 9800GT just barely cutting it for 1440x900. People are not playing Oblivion and the original Bioshock any more. The latest DX11/10 titles can really stress the last-gen DX10 cards. Also, only 512MB of video RAM is a problem in many new games, where you are forced to turn the texture detail down.

As for the PSU, it should be fine for either card unless you do some extreme overclocking or already run your CPU at 1.6V or something crazy like that.
My 450W PSU handles a Phenom II at 3.4 GHz/1.35V and a GTX460 factory OC'd to 700MHz just fine. I've run Prime95 with the "maximum heat" stress test with Furmark running at the same time. The PSU fan speeds up, but nothing blows up and there are absolutely no crashes or voltage fluctuations. You will however get higher efficiency, lower temps and lower power usage with a GTX460 and/or a better PSU.

I said his 9800gt would still be "decent enough" at 1440x900 and it will for the most part. also at 1440x900 512mb is not an issue at all. other than GTA 4 it would offer no benefit especially on a lower midrange card.

as for the psu I am not going to go through all of this again but he would be foolish to try and run a gtx465 on it. its a cheap, low end and dated psu that is not remotely suitable for reliably handling that kind of load. you have a high quality Corsair 450watt psu and a video card that uses nearly 90 watts less (in Furmark according to anandtech) so there is no comparison to him running a gtx465 and cheap psu.

There is nothing wrong with that 585 power supply. I've used dozens of them in builds and even in higher end systems. While the power supply is NOT 80 plus, it does have about a 75% efficiency rating which is still respectible especially for the price.

Thats all just my opinion and experience of course. :)

That 465GTX deal is sooo tempting. I just got a 460GTX for $160 at Microcenter (768mb). That $60 MSI rebate is kind of a bitch thouhg. I don't know how I feel about that since I've gotten burned once before on an MSI rebate.

I've noticed that enthusiasts love to WAY overkill on PSU's to the point of ridiculousness.

the psu that the op has is NOT enough to reliably power his system with a gtx465. the psu doesn't even list what its truly capable of on the 12v lines combined but rest assured its well less than what it would be if you just added them together. just using common sense would tell you there is a reason that its a 585 watt psu for 26 bucks. formulav8's post is sort of meaningless because efficiency doesn't have squat to do with the psu not be strong enough.

I bought the MSI frozr II gtx465 last night. $212 shipped, $60 MIR, and I already own Mafia II so I'm going to sell the steam key that comes with this card for $30 when I get it.

$212 - 30 = $182. $182 - $60 MIR = $122. An absolute steal this particular card.

Every single review shows this particular card can hit over 800mhz core and still run incredibly cool and nearly completely silent. Reviews also show this card drawing less power than reference gtx465's. When I get it in about 2 days I will post my benchmarks, stable overclocks, and overall impressions.

On a side note, I have the ASUS gtx460 1 gig 800mhz card on back order (still) from Amazon for $210. It's showing a ship date of later this week although it has been pushed back 3 times now. What I'll probably end up doing is, assuming this card eventually ships is keeping it and selling the gtx465 frozr II for $140. Both cards have essentially the same stock performance, but I think gtx460 scales better with overclocks, and obviously consumes less power. I have aspirations of building a gaming HTPC next year and using the asus gtx460 (in which case the cooler running chip, less power draw, and smaller sized card would be more ideal).

It was a blanket statement and not necessarily a comment regarding the OP and the debate about his psu. What I said still beyond holds true for the most part.
