While MSI is now rolling out its gaming series of Geforce GTX 970 and GTX 980 soon, we should not expect any extreme Lightning model based on GM204-circuit. There, save the MSI gunpowder to GTX 980 Ti or GTX 990 as it is expected to emerge in the coming months.

GM210, what is that, the 20nm respin of GM200? When's that coming out, 2H 2015? GM200 already taped out but we know that it's 28nm, so best case scenario with a ~600mm card is 50% faster than GTX 980. That's not going to cut it with 4K, considering even 3 or 4 GTX 980s can't hit 60fps in some games at 4K. Wishful thinking, unless their idea of single card 4K gaming is drop $1000 on a video card to play games with no AA/AF at 35fps at 4K.

The next card coming is the GTX960 next month.

I doubt a big Maxwell GPU is coming within the next 6 months.

The source is also nothing but speculation on the lack of a MSI lightning model.

Nvidia will have GM200(taped out already, GPUs sent to Nvidia India for testing) ready by then to show to their compute customers because their biggest customers want the energy efficient Maxwell to power their biggest FP64 workloads and reduce their energy usage.

Yeah this sounds like a likely date for higher end Maxwelll, I think we could see a GM200 Titan 2 at that date with maybe a GTX 985/990 (maybe a Ti as well? Also not sure about Dual GM204) a few months later or at the same time.

Thats what I initially thought, but there was a leak of the first tape out samples of the GM200 (one or two weeks apart from the GM204). Plus the rumours of perhaps the biggest 28nm silicon ever witnessed (>600mm2). If yields are good enough and the margins are there ($999 anyone?) it could be possible..

Id imagine it'd be a 24SMM config/384bit + DP capabilities? Its about time the absolute performance barrier is lifted.

Remember what happend last time?

Tesla.

How long did it take before the Geforce variant came?

I don't mind if the geforce version doesn't come out (or perhaps a Titan refresh?). More interested in the architectural details and what its capable of when it can use with the "high end" headroom :D.

To maximize sales/node limitations, I'd guess a 980ti around the end of the year, titan 2 in late spring, and big maxwell next summer.

980 is a full GM204 and I don't see Nvidia releasing a bigger GPU until they're on a different node. They had more pressure on them to release the GK110 a couple of years ago than they do now for a GM210, and they still didn't release it. I'm sure we'll see a 990 though. GM204 should make for a beast of a dual GPU card.

These rumors are the type of thing holding me back.

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm expecting a refresh at 20nm in a few months = should be a nice boost in Heat/Power/Performance.

Also, over at HardOCP, they're thinking a dual GPU card is coming out . . . now that would be a monster.

An Nvidia employee published an article exploring computation on Maxwell earlier. They wrote this

You find tons of GM200 traces on Zauba.com.
So GM200 is undoubtly coming "soon". Probably November/December.

Insofar as GM200 in concerned (and this is probably better left for another thread), I'm guessing 50% more cores than GM204, as opposed to the almost doubling GK110 had over GK104. There just isn't that much die space left to work with when moving up from 398mm^2. Anyways, 24 SMM's 384-bit bus, 24 SMM's (3072 cores), and 40% more performance over GM204. I think Nvidia is going to skip 20nm entirely except with Tegra Maxwell.

I'm a native Swedish reader(disclosing this as G'Translate isn't always that great for niche languages like Swedish to English). The story basically said that MSI has no confirmation at all on anything. So for all we know it could just be MSI spin to explain away the lack of a Lightning card.

Also, NHW.se(the site reporting the news) has had a mixed record on rumors. Sweclockers.com are the gold standard.

Finally, Ryan made it pretty clear that the 980 is indeed the full-blown GM204. I say this is because the story has a sub-header which essentially says "saying the gunpowder for GM204 and 980 Ti".

Of course, further down in the last paragraph, the story reconnects with the fact that if you really want a big card, it should be GM210.

Overall, this rumor is unlikely to materialise. The source is dicey, MSI's story looks more like spin and overall, a GM210 launch would be completely illogical, because what is for 2015 then? Only a node shrink(and we all know that 20 nm isn't going to bring massive benefits without tri-gate in terms of performance)?

I find it hard to believe an Nvidia employee would post a chart which didn't get the GK204 name right.

I have no idea about the rumor itself, but I can easily imagine 20nm being at least 12 months away, and NV needing to put out something that actually increases performance before that. A slightly bigger version of GM204 is all it takes (or rather, just clocking it higher and adding 384bit is probably enough by itself).

Sigh. Always waiting. Looking forward to a decent mid-range $200 (or $180 AR) Maxwell GPU.

Sure, 750 ti is OK, but it's overpriced for what it is, when you can get R7 260X 2GB OC cards for $100.

I think it is unlikely that NVidia's highest end card will be $550 for very long. That's probably the biggest clue that something faster is coming down the pipe sooner rather than later.

I doubt there is a concrete schedule for it though. NVidia will probably wait to see what AMD's response to the just released Maxwell GPU's will be and then steal AMD's thunder with a higher end part immediately. If AMD only drops prices then we'll probably have to wait until early next year before the part is released. Without a higher end part from AMD this year, we aren't going to see anything better from NVidia.

dual GPU would make sense given how relatively conservative the chip is with regards to still being on 28nm (weighing in between GK104 and 110 in terms of silicon, but being no worse than GK104 in terms of TDP)

but seeing big Maxwell before a node shrink would be a bit surprising, although not out of the realm of possibility considering just how efficient Maxwell is. Plus it would mean a die shrink could produce a healthy refresh cycle to bridge the gap until Pascal (which is, last I knew, still slated for 2016...)

Nvidia's last 2x double stacked card card sucked BIG TIME, the 690 GTX couldn't even beat 670 Sli in bench's..... then their was the 2x Titan that sucked as well, Nvidia doesn't do 2x stacked cards well at all. The 980Ti will be the card to buy if any of this series....

I think a 990 (dual 970) and a 995 (Dual 980/980 Ti) would be good as it would provide 2 price points to hit and the power consumption lends well to dual cards.

I think Pascal and the Mezzanine connector will be the time that Nvidia takes the next step with SLi.
