Dual GPUs sell out because they have limited runs and are popular in certain hardcore, niche markets, such as the benching/folding/bitcoin communities. It's not really because the performance is double that of single GPUs. In fact, as has been said, the 680 gives the dual GPUs a run for their money in many benchmarks.

Cards like the 6990 and the 590 are hot, loud, and expensive, and don't really cater to your average early 20s gamer who just wants solid performance in the 2-3 games he plays. Even as a rich, douchebag attorney, I wouldn't drop a grand on a dual GPU card unless I was chasing benches.

Probably not fully optimized. The 7970 was doing like 300mhash in Tom's test, and now they easily do 600mhash with an optimized miner. But if those sort of gains are possible, we are only looking at around 220mhash for a 680, if an optimized miner doubles the performance... not enough. It would have to be a 5X increase to even be worth considering.

Cause the people that do know already grabbed them, you wont find a 5970,590 or 6990 anywhere anymore unless your ready to pay an arm and leg on ebay.

Why won't I buy a GTX 680? Can't afford it. I've been itching to find a decent upgrade for my 4890 but somehow the midrange market is raping the consumer on prices. I guess I have to wait until AMD starts phasing out their 6950s and pick one up on sale, or a good deal on a GTX 560 Ti(...not likely)

Even those who want to buy one now have to contend with non-existent stock. The prices of last gen cards has actually gone up a bit in the last week, probably due to 28nm supply/price issues.

I'm not in the market for high-end GPUs, my max budget is probably £150 or less, so not for me. Also, my last GPU was an 8800GT which bumbgated (as did my brother's, and I've also personally seen 8400GS, nForce 7100 plus lots of laptops which bumbgated), so I'm unlikely to buy Nvida again... I don't game much but that was the highest level card I ever bought (for myself) and I'm not going to forget the incident any time soon :-(

I'm not surprised, Nividia took out most of the compute parts of the chip, a recompile may achieve a bit more but I doubt it will be a high %. Unsure if mining is double precision or single, but DP is very low on the 680.

As usual the hype with Nvidia launches is huge. Fair enough, the 680 performs very well in games and it's amazingly efficient for Nvidia but it certainly has issues too. Poor compute (which is fine for most people of course), so-so PCB construction (it really is mid range) and that suspect auto boost.

Now CPU Turbo is fine by me, but because this Boost is based solely on thermals which in turn are based on the cooling of people cases plus the binning of each chip, it is very hard to predict what exactly the average stock speed is going to for someone buying that card. In general though I am sort of in favour of the Boost but I do think reviewers should be a bit more careful with it since is in it effect a YMMV auto overclock rather more predictable CPU Turbo (max this Turbo and no more).

I already have a GTX 580 1.5GB and I'm in no hurry to upgrade to a faster video card. Bought it about 14 months ago, probably the longest I ever kept the same video card. I'll wait at least a few months and read user reviews on the GTX 680, but mainly read them for fun. My GTX 580 handles 1080p gaming just fine. Isn't the GTX 680, nVidia's current generation midrange card anyways, and is there going to be a high end single GPU card coming?

When I started this thread I just assumed most were getting new cards whether it's amd or nvidia. I was totally surprised that most just say meh and will keep what they have. I'm pretty sure I'm keeping my current card as well for the foreseeable future. I haven't skipped a complete generation of cards since I started pc gaming. Part of it is getting older and another part is the fact my overclocked gtx 480 still plays games really well.
It really makes me wonder if nvidia/amd are going to see lackluster sales this year?

My 590 was 100 EUROs more than 580, its not that loud (and i am fairly sensitive to noise) and as a matter of fact, it is 2x as fast as 580 in my gpgpu application (Octane render).
680 is indeed new generation, so no reason to compare it to 590. It was always going to give it run for its money, at least when it comes to gaming. Now i am curious, how would it fare in Octane. If its on par with my 590, i might sell it and buy 690, when its out.

BTW, do you think that, assuming there is going to be "big Kepler", the dual gk110 card is technically possible? I mean, 680 is 200 Watts already, big Kepler will probably be around 300...

I got mine yesterday and man it feels like a huge upgrade over my 5870. BF3 runs smoother on ultra than it did on medium/high settings on my 5870 so I'm pretty happy there. The only other game I really tried was Witcher 2 which I can max out now (except for ubersampling) and get a pretty consistent 60fps. Adaptive VS seems to work pretty well in Witcher 2, it locks at 60 when it can but sometimes it drops into the lower 50's/high 40's and it looks a lot nicer than dropping to 30 from 60.

Also this is the first time in a while that my new card has been smaller than my old one, the 680 is like 3/4" shorter than the 5870.

You were saying? Or are you smoking crack, no single card gpu can top a dual gpu card thats imposible even considering an older gen 5970. The pixel and texel rate is double or more. Im seeing benchmarks posted in this thread where those cards are even beating 6990s and 590s which is also butchered.
Its obvious the benchmarks where the dual GPU solutions lose are not optimized for the multigpu setup and must be only using one of the cores.
