GTX 280 Power Supply

I have 2 280s on the 750TX.


Got my kill-a-watt setup on it last night.


Idle: 229W

3dmark06: 480W

Far Cry 2 Benchmark tool: 502W

COD4: 518W





Most people would say I need 1000W+ to run this system. The main PS Calculator online told me I need 1000-1200.

But when actually measured, I could not get it to go above 69% usage.

And if you factor in maybe 80% efficiency for the PSU, your system is really only using like 414w or so for COD4, am I right?

Thanks for posting that, my Corsair 520HX should work fine then with only one GTX280. :thumbsup:

One thing to also look out for is/are how many amps it is capable of. Im not sure what it is on that particular model, but it is as important as wattage.

Which is enough for gtx280 sli - depending on how much power the rest of his components are drawing. If you've got a raid array, water setup, fans, leds, hdds, usb devices, disc drives, sound, phsyx, add-on cards, lcd panels, etc you might be cutting it close.

IMO, it's plenty enough power for one gtx280, unless your system is extravagant.

Here's GTX 280 running on a quad. Everything at stock but this is a bare computer. Only CPU, mobo, 1 hard drive, 2 memory sticks, no DVD-RW drive, and no overclocking.

if you factor in the dvd-rw, overclocking, extra hard drive, usb devices. You are probably looking at another 100 watts or so. A quality 550 watt should handle it easily.

It sounds like my rig should be fine with the Antec TP-II 550 I have in it then.

The price difference between a 1000W power supply and a 750W power supply is pretty significant. It's not really needed, but the power supply makers would like to make you think so. It's like Monster cable making you believe you need their overpriced HDMI cable to get better picture quality. It's all placebo. My 750W PC P&C does just fine with an overclocked i7 and two GTX 280s.
