I thought you couldn't get 59 GB on 7 DVD's. DVD's could only hold about 700MB. Unless it's compressed and will have to be unpacked. That is some compression if so.

Yes, i too will be going Best Buy to get a copy. I like having something to hold for my 60 bucks. Anyway, my son hijacked my Steam account and i don't want to make another right now.

That's CD's.

Rockstar Social is where I logged in to activate my download key that I bought form GMG.

See thats what I was curious about. Would you be able to use the key from the retail box and download the game digitally?

Since you need to register the key to Rockstar Social Club, and you will need to download a 0-day patch as well (well, the final bits of the game, however you want to define it), and every other digital service works that way, you can say with almost certainty that yes, the retail key will let you download digitally.

Thanks for the clarification Lonyo. :)

Steam for me, but I dont want to install on a slow 7200rpm drive, no space for a 60+ GB game on my raptor. Eventually Ill pick up an SSD and reinstall OS...

I remember the days when I HAD to have a box in my hand. The last box version of a game I bought was WoW I think. This helps make the decision though, no cap.

Well due to incredibly slow speeds here, I decided to pick up the Retail version.
At least my download size will be much smaller.
Very envious of the high speed connections some of you have.
I only have a 2mb connection here at home.

I prefer keeping my games on Steam, but since Comcast charges me for anything over 300GB, I prefer to avoid such huge chunks being taken up by one thing. So, I'd try to see if anyone I knew (in real life) has the discs so I could use those with a digital copy.

Well, my main game (55GB) took about 12 hours to download (from Amazon). Downloading from Rockstar was not happening.
The remaining 5GB patch from Rockstar for the final bits of content took about... 12 hours to download, since their servers have been boned.
Then there was a 350MB patch after that, which got to about 250MB (eventually), then eventually after various pauses and restarts I got it to 295MB, then it kept losing connection entirely and falling back to 295MB. Then eventually it completed with most of that 55MB or so downloading at about (literally) 6KB/s, so that was another hour or so for that bit.

Eventually after downloading bits of the game across 3 different days I could finally play it. Even if I had bought it boxed/retail, those last 2 bits would still have been a problem. I wasn't the only one finding Rockstar's downloader to be a POS, since there were various threads on the Rockstar forums about it as well. At least it wasn't my end.

I went with GMG since the VIP price was $47. I bought it yesterday hoping to get the special price and the preorder extra in-game cash, but I didnt get the cash.

Had no idea people even bought retail dvds anymore, i don't even have a dvd drive in computer for years now.

The only reason i used to have a dvd drive was for installing windows, but don't need a dvd for that anymore.

It would actually take me LONGER to install with discs than to download a game. lol

My internet maxes out at about 4 meg a second so that's good enough to download anything under 100 gig without it being too painful.

It would almost take longer to install the game from the DVD's I would think, and certainly a lot more annoying.

Aye... I read about all the issues. Thing is by the time I start the update to the retail install, I am hoping its slightly less an issue. We shall see.
I already successfully logged into the Social account with no issues prior and that's working fine.

There is no way a 4mb line will download 60gb quicker than the retail disk install, even if the install takes 3 hours. There will be a significant time difference.

Are most Steam required boxed retail games allowing you to install from disc or are many requiring you to download it once you register the key?I believe Origin did this to me with BF3.

Still got a boxed copy of COD:BO1 that has been registered with Steam,i wonder if i slap the disc in if the game would install from it or still force me to download?Been that long since i bought anything from a box lol. That and the BF3 pre-order.

What is this social club crap? Do the console versions have to go through the same thing?

Well if you did like I did, I was surfing the web, etc. when it was installing, and the 'please change dvds' alert wouldn't pop up. So I had to keep manually checking. Sometimes I forgot about it and I know I wasted 10-15 minutes with it just sitting there.

Fair enough... waiting like that is annoying, but it would allow you to start a disk, make some food, check emails, browse youtube and the likes. :D

Out of curiosity...is the install time with the disks around 2 hours ? or closer to 3 hours?

Be glad you don't need to deal with GFWL and all that bs.Social Club for me anyways has been easy breezy.Click play in Steam,it pops open and seconds later the game loads on its own.Hassle free.

Also like that if you sit in the menu long enough,it actually will load you right into the game.I like that cause usually i could grab a beer or a quick snack while all that happens.:)I wish more games would do that.

It was kinda annoying because it also does it after you run a benchmark. I ran the benchmark, and then sat there for awhile waiting for the scene to change. It was doubly confusing because the bank scene is also the first scene in the benchmark, so I thought it was doing another pass.

Also, kinda disappointed
they turned the protagonist from Lost and the Damned into a meth head and killed him off without a second thought. That could have been interesting if there was more to it.
