Question GTA V freezing on lower end minimum spec CPUs with GTX 280/HD 4870/HD 5870/HD 6970/9800GT but not on newer CPU.

So, I can't seem to figure this out; at first I thought it was the GPUs/GPU drivers, but it clearly isn't. GTA V with all the following cards I have tried will freeze shortly after starting a the benchmark or upon entering the story mode: 9800GT 1GB, GTX 280 1GB, HD 48070 1GB, HD 5870 1GB, and HD 6970 2GB on the following configurations: Core2Quad Q9650/16GB RAM/W10 Pro 64bit and Xeon X3230/8GB RAM/W7 Pro 64bit. Whether settings are at 1080p or all the way down to 800x600; whether overclocked or stock clocks, whether page file sized is increased or default, whether in offline mode or online mode. Also, these computers have fresh windows installs with hardly any additional programs on them and the hard drives are new. Graphics settings are set below 1024MB and using the latest drivers from AMD/Nvidia.

Now if I take, say, the GTX 280 and pair it with my 4770K/16GB RAM/W7 system (6 year old installation of W7), then I have no issues, can play for hours @1080p with no problem.

The minimum for GTA V is listed as Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600/4GB RAM/9800GT. My Q9650 definitely meets that requirement and since the freezing method is in common with both; I suspect the X3230 is having the same issue as the Q9650.

Anyone have any idea what is causing this?

It works properly before encountering the freeze? Seems like some faulty component in your Core 2 Quad/Xeon system is causing the issue.

Neither system has any issues running anything aside from GTA V; I've even played Ghost Recon Wildlands on my Q9650 system; with the 9650 overclocked to boot, with no issues. As far as GTA V it freezes within moments of entering story mode or benchmark mode.

This is an overclocked Core2Quad rig? Have you tried it at stock? Done any RAM tests or disk surface-scan tests?

Does an OCCT:pSU or OCCT:GPU test fail (freeze/BSOD/crash) on the same rig?

Yes tried @stock vs O/C on both it and the X3230, even switched out the RAM on both just to double tap.

It's quite possible a patch broke the game for the Core 2 lineup, and most of the time developers won't update their minimum requirements for performance.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find an earlier build of the game.

I will note that I recently had a 2015 version of the game running on a Deneb-based (Phenom II X4) and Nehalem-based (Xeon X5675) systems.

Good point; both CPUs are LGA 775; I have a Phenom II X4 965 BE system; will try on that one with the GTX 280 to see if same issue persist. My Nehalem/Bloomfield systems (920/60)don't have this issue with GTA 5; even when overclocked 1.1Ghz from base clocks.

It should not require any regression in game version to run on those specs. Saw a video doing it yesterday -
