I have always been under the impression that GTA4 ran like shit on PC. Is it still true or has it been patched up? I've wanted to play it since release but reports of awful performance has kept me away.

I'm playing it now on a high end rig (i7 3770k, GTX680, 16GB ram) @ 1920x1200 and it runs like butter with all the bling turned up, including draw distance, shadows, and car density. Pretty nice playing it again with a new rig that can max it out.

That said, I had the controls in GTA IV in general. Very floaty and non-responsive.

The PC port after several patches eventually became more playable. Or perhaps over time, people's rigs have just gotten stronger to handle such a crappy console port?

I started playing it in late 2010, roughly 2 years after its PC release, so the patches indeed might have had their impact. I played it on an unlocked Phenom 550 (3.7GHZ per core IIRC) and HD5750 with everything but shadow set to max. Beautiful rendering and performance.

I couldn't care much about the shooting mechanics but just driving around like a mad man and the humor is what makes the series great for me as well.
Amen to those. ():)

The controls I find are very good...driving is as responsive as can be. And I've already mentioned how I like the shooting.

I played the game briefly on the console, didn't find it that compelling. For some reason, playing it with mouse + kb is really good.

Let us know how you fare with the helicopter on the final mission. On KB+Mouse. ;)

I was able to complete the game with a keyboard and mouse....at release you could not climb up in the helicopter....that is not the case any more.

I completed the game with keyboard and mouse, and loved every minute of it.

I used iCEnhancer 1.25......looked fantastic.

The game was completely unplayable at launch no matter what type of PC you had. It was patched many times to remedy the many staggering problems. DRM was removed as well, so it's actually worth picking up (if you can stand the somewhat stale story).

I finished the game on KB+Mouse too but the control was definitely not easy. Replaying it on a gamepad was far easier (as far as controlling a helicopter is concerned).

The game was patched, it ran like greased lightning on my old GTX460 after the patch.

Good game, but it was missing some of the insanity of GTA3.

The Episodes Liberty City pretty much fixed most of the stuff, that I felt needed improved in GTA IV.

I had never touched a GTA game before playing this......loaded my favorite mp3's in ndependence radio and never looked back.

Great game...can see some funny shit just driving around the city......love the game.
