it used to be waaaaaaaaaaaaay back when if a white person tried to talk black, especially around a black person, they would be laughed at, or worse. the black people seemed to really take exception to it. they thought it was somewhat disingenuous.

i don't mock or put down the black culture for having their own way of speaking, but it can be annoying. i especially hate watching sports center and hearing to all the "boo yeahs" and "mad hops/skillz" type sayings :) i hate to even think that way because that is what true tolerance is all about (whereas voting for some black kid because you think that is the right thing to versus voting for him because he deserves it, for instance).

i think what a lot of people get tweaked about is how white kids have adopted parts of black culture. it's like they are betraying their own white culture. they ain't acting white and that annoys people. my best friend who teaches high school talks about this all the time. it drives him crazy.

First off, it gets on my nerves too.

Having said that, language is fluid. It is made up of colloquialisms, regional dialects, social strata, etc... this no different. Many people who speak "proper english", and who feel that they are above such base regional/cultural dialects, are generally quite comfortable ending sentences with a preposition or beginning sentences with a conjunction. How many people here have had their knuckles rapped or their mouths washed out with soap for ending a sentence with a preposition? From what I gather, most teachers don't bother to even point out such flaws to students anymore because the rules have relaxed for common usage.

Want to put the ebonics into perspective? Go talk to someone with a cockney accent, or heck just visit Wales. These people have been "slaughtering" the english language since before the Americas were founded.

Why can I enjoy listening to a Cockney accent and be driven nuts by the Ebonics??
