Grrr, I'm sick of looking for work in the computer industry

pretend this is all caps because I'm pissed: I just got a call from a company that I interviewed with for a sofware sales position: no, they won't offer me a sales job, but they have a minimum-wage data entry job that I'd be perfect for . . .

I'm desperate, I would have taken sales associate or research or support, but friggin entry level no benefits?? Heck no, I can keep working my p/t jobs and not have to dress up and commute!!!

This has happened to me a lot recently. I'm female and over 50; I started working as a FORTRAN programmer back when that was state of the art, that was just the beginning; I've had a lot of different jobs since then, including owning a couple of my own businesses.

I long ago stopped looking for hardware or programming jobs, considering all the young & non-female applicants I never had a chance. And to be honest, back when I was hiring techs I probably wouldn't have hired me either, because I have more sales than tech chops, because sales is what you do when you own the company.

I think I'm going to cut my losses and "retire" from the computer racket. Either that or start up a seniors-only IT biz as revenge.

This may not sound like much of a rant to you, but it's a big deal to me.

I now return to my current temp job, ghostwriting a human resources manual for a local business. Hey, it'll keep me & my kid in Ramen for a while.

I'm sorry to hear you've had such difficulty finding a job. I'd support you in your Seniors-only IT biz, but only if I could get an acctg position. :p

I think a lot of us can understand your frustration. Older folks who suddenly find themselves out of a job are also quite often out of luck finding new jobs. Too much new blood (and cheaper salaries) to go around with all the young folks. All I can say is sorry and good luck with your search.

If you don't mind the question - what happened to your old job ?

I sold the companies I founded, for decent money. My last f/t job was running my ex-husband's company, long story - I'd just sold out of a business, and my ex was going nuts (new girlfriend, etc) and our son was diagnosed with a serious illness so I stepped in and kept his co. going (health insurance) for what I thought would be a short time until I could get another job - but then life got even more complicated.

Anyway, thanx for listening. I just needed to get that off my chest.

file a nice age or sex discrimination suit and crush a few of these companies, just for fun ;)

I'm young and male and have the same trouble finding an IT job as you. Experience seems to be far more important. But I agree that there are too many people wanting an IT job that it's hard to find one that pays well.
