Stupid guy in an SUV hit me.

There was about 4 inches of snow on the ground and I was going less than 5MPH when I stopped. He messed up my pristine bumper but my kids, friend and I are OK although I have a bit of a headache.

When are some SUV drivers going to realize just because they have SUVs, they are not sports cars in snow. I saw all of these idiots in SUVs along the way tailgating people and switching in and out of lanes like it was a race. I'm not SUV bashing since I had one too and know its not a sports car, only the idiots that drive them like the are.

lol, I got rear ended last year by a guy in a van driving on snowy streets. People are idiots. Glad to hear you are ok.

Make sure his insurance pays for everything. What kind of car do you have?

09 BMW 335i RWD. I had snow tires so my car was handling the snow great. The idiot couldn't even stop when a guy was braking from 5MPH. Shows how worthless all seasons really are.

The car was perfectly fine with snow tires. Just because it's RWD doesn't mean it cannot handle some snow. The limiting factor really was ground clearance.

All seasons are fine in snow; the guy (or gal) who hit you was a crappy driver.

I had Yokohama Advans on my G35 and they were supposed to be the best all-seasons you can get. I was doing 360s going 10MPH and couldn't get up slight inclines without a running start. I would much rather have my RWD with snow tires than an AWD with all seasons.

I had an SUV (Acura MDX) which is very similar to the Pilot that hit me. That SUV could not stop on the all seasons which it came with. The stopping distance was horrendous. I could start up somewhat decently but I wouldn't be able to stop or turn in snow without skidding some distance. I believe I was running Michelin MXVs on the MDX.

All season tires do ok in most winter conditions, but a snow tire will do even better at getting going, turning and stopping as it's rubber compound is optimized for cold weather gripping. Hope your car is not too bad. Post a pix or two.

I drove my step brothers 87 wrangler last night to visit my ... well that's not important. Anyway, there were a LOT of idiots on the road. People pulled over to the "side". For some reason, when people don't see lines, they think they can park wherever they want. On my way back, two people stopped dead in the middle of the "right lane" on the top of a hill. And they were laughing at me as I was driving by (my guess is they were 4x4 fanatics and just gawking, but still).

Then, after I got past these imbicilles, I followed a 1970-something 2WD suburban almost all the way home. Stupid ******* tried to make a turn and got stuck in the intersection. When he/she finally did make it through, they were basically drifting the entire way. I definitely gave them enough room.

Be safe out there, people. There are A LOT of idiots out there.

I still disagree. I have driven all-seasons for 12+ years in MN and hadn't had issues. I will agree that all-seasons vary a great deal in snow performance though. When you research tires, you must read detailed reviews about the snow performance. The OEM "all season + snow" Michelins that came with my Mazda6 a number of years back were terrible on the snow/ice.

Unfortunately, "all-season" doesn't always mean snow. A good set will be fine though, assuming you do your research.

Were you being a ninny nancy with that 5 mph or was it warrented?

No. I know how to drive in snow. I lived next to a ski resort for two years.

The accident was in Manhattan on 14th and 3rd. There was an ambulance crossing in front of me so everyone on the avenue stopped including me. The guy in back told me it was my fault for stopping (?!?).

ExarKun333, I suppose you may be right. I probably went for the highest performance all season rather than the best weather performing all season.

No it is not your fault. It is the idiot behind you who is not paying attention to the road & traffic. You always need to yield to an emergency vehicle and even if it is just a case of deciding to stop as the light had gone to Yellow, it is your choice to avoid a potential red light ticket or accident in the intersection. I always watch two cars in front of me, when I can, so I see who is slowing down. That way, no last minute surprise slamming on the brakes.

Recently got rear-ended in my 335i at 5mph by a full size van, replaced the bumper and truck lid, it cost the other guy's insurance company $6k.

I agree, this was definitely NOT your fault. The other car should have given themselves more space to stop, and they failed to do so.

$6K!

I think mine is going to be a replaced bumper. I don't know if there's any structural damage. Fortunately, their bumper and mine matched up so I didn't get messed up as much as you did. It sucks that I didn't have a scratch on my bumper. If I did, I would more than welcome a new bumper.

FWIW, just cause he rear-ended you doesn't automatically mean he's a bad driver. I consider myself a very good driver but I'll most likely cause an accident sometime in my life. Even good drivers make mistakes/get distracted

Though I'm not saying this guy is/isn't a good driver, just don't assume too much unless he did other stuff to suggest he's a bad driver

One thing I think a lot of people don't seem to realize is that all vehicles have 4-wheel brakes. 4 wheel drive doesn't help much when you are trying to stop. The laws of physics can not be circumvented. If you can't keep your vehicle on the road safely when conditions are less than perfect, then do everyone a favor and stay home.

Anybody who doesn't know how their vehicle will react in adverse conditions should have to be ready to pay when things don't work in their favor. Can't handle the heat? stay home buttmunch.

I don't know why your complaining, you get free money now. Just get an estimate and submit it. You can either pocket the money and fix it yourself (best option) or take it in for repair. :)

Ummm...well. My car is practically brand new, I have to take time out of my schedule to get it repaired, will now be listed as in an accident, had no dings or scratches, and I own it. If I had leased it I wouldn't care. But this isn't bothering me as much as it would have in the past. My kids are safe.

Fine is relative, though; they are inferior to snow. They are fine compared to racing slicks, though.

BTW this accident WAS your fault. Just don't stop ever again or even slow down and you won't get rear-ended. Simple.

That's not entirely true...
