grilling != bbq

What about cooking with lump charcoal... it's actual large pieces of wood that have been charred... not compressed bits of wood compressed with filler material.

I never use instant light charcoal or light charcoal with lighter fluid. I place a charcoal chimney over a propane burner to start it.

"Grilling" nazi's always annoy me (as do most nazi's) because I can't understand why anyone gives a cr@p why they are bothered when someone refers to it as bbq'ing.

too bad the local bylaw prohibits me from cutting any tree with circumference >1ft, or I would have turned the cherry tree pit into a firepit 😀
 
I've heard those electric smokers don't smoke as good as propane. Something about the wood chunks not igniting very well. I've been looking for a decent vertical propane smoker thats wide enough to put a rack of ribs in. The one's at lowes, sears, and walmart are only about maybe 18 inches wide. It would be fine for a butt and chicken, but to small for ribs unless you cut them in half.

i use a gas grill because the convenience can't be beat. no mess, takes 2 minutes to heat up and cooks meat well. Charcoal does taste different, but when you cook outside 5 nights / week, its really lame. about 5 years ago we got a cookshack electric smoker. this thing is a modern marvel. excellent tasting food, simple to use, simple to clean, no messing with the right wood/water mix. no worrying about the fire going out while you're gone fishin for the day. since then, i haven't even considered using the $400 weber smoker we had previously
 
Nobody cares about your uppity 'holier than thou' definitions. I usually call it grilling, but since you're such an elitist prick about it I'm going to start referring to it as BBQ out of spite. In fact I'm going to throw even more BBQs just so I can use my new favorite term more.

Only the elitist Southerners get all uppity about barbeque being superior to grilling & declare that their bbq is superior.

Of course, we Yankees recognize the superiority of cooking a nice rib eye on the grill in 6 minutes while the Southerners rejoice in wasting multiple hours cooking a low-quality cut of meat on the grill super-slowly in order to impart some edibleness and to turn what would normally be shoe leather into something tender. Hell, it takes 4 or 5 hours to add flavor to some of those cuts of meat, so I think it's only fair that we let them take pride in making what we consider inedible to actually be tasty.

I do. It's fabulous. Think about it - you smoke cheese, right? Think about how good smoked cheese is and do that with mac-n-cheese. It's awesome.

That would explain the issue. People are thinking briquette when they hear charcoal. I would hate it too if it is briquette.
