It depends on just how deep he was into this thing. If he found out and was looking for a way to keep his wife's name out of things then he'll survive it. If he knew all along or worse, participated, he's done.

No one knows what is going on. Just a lot of speculation. I can't wait to hear the evidence though.

so far there is no evidence that they were betting on hockey. if that proves to be true then who cares.

Gretzky's Wife and his best friend (currently a coach for the Coyotes) were betting heavily. Janet Jones (gretzky's wife) bet 75K on the super bowl and she has placed 40+ bets in the last 8 weeks for a total dollar value of 500k.

his friend apparently was the one involved in running the book.

here is the problem, it is illegal gambling, if they had done it at Vegas or AC at a casino it wouldn't be a story.

d1gger, i agree, it seems highly unlikely that he was completely uninvolved as he is claiming.

rose admitted that he bet on baseball. he came to an agreement with the former baseball commissioner that he would accept the lifetime ban on baseball if they would not show evidence that he bet on baseball.

then rose PO'd the commisioner by acting like baseball was doing him an injustice and that he never bet on baseball, so the commisioner told people that rose did bet on baseball.

it is a mess.

gretzky could go that route.

Mr California doesn't know the answer to this one?

Janet lives in their home in LA.
Wayne maintains a seasonal residence in Phoenix while he's coaching.

They live in LA and Phoenix, and gambling is illegal in Canada, except in the casinos.

Michael Jordan is well known to be a gambling fiend and had public problems with it. Big whoop.

It's not like Gretzky bet on anything or fixed games. This is his first year of coaching.

The ring also has alleged ties to organized crime. :disgust:

not yet, the investigation is still early on.

yesterday the story was, gretzky's wife gambled but gretzky didn't know.

today the story is, gretzky clearly knew his wife was gambling.

what is next.

the thing is, even if gretzky had NOTHING to do with the gambling except that he knew about it, he HAD to have known that his image would be HURT if it came out his wife was gambling on sports.

it's just stupid.

you say it as if "alleged" means it probably isn't true or isn't to be taken seriously.

there was a dirty cop involved so it could have been bigger than we know about right now.

They are concerned that current NHL players / coaches will get in debt to the organized crime syndicate and be told to throw a game or suffer the consequences.

What amazed me was the story that Wayne G. wife bet $500,000 in less than a month of wagering!! No stats on how much she won or lost, but OMFG how can anyone put that much money at risk on a sporting event. She even bet $5k on the super bowl coin toss.

I hadn't heard about that...

not just debt.

organized crime would know most successful nhl players / coaches could pay their debts, the problem would be if organized crime threatened physical harm if the player/coach did not throw games etc.
