Green Thumbs? What do people grow here?

Im actually thinking of possibly buying some equipment, and setting up a small grow room so i can grow some heirloom tomatoes (omfg so amazing) and was wondering if anyone here grows anything? I am also thinking of possibly growing some jalepnenos, just to mess around with them.

does anyone else grow plants?

i have this section of my yard where i grow crab grass, dandelions, ragweed, picker bushes..
its amazing really, and the neighbor..well she loves it...

I'm surprised. With your avatar, you should have a green thumb for herbs and other natural supplements. Or you're on the demand side, not on the supply.

there is a slight legal problem w/ talking about that on here...

but i really do want to try heirloom tomatoes, i had some last year fresh, and the are just amazing... but also outrageously expensive.

OP: You're in Ohio, you should be able to toss seeds out the window at dawn and harvest a complete salad in time for dinner.

Okay, shovel the snow first, but then it should work.


We grow lemons, grapefruit, kalamansi (calamondin), nopalitos, pomegranates, and some kitchen herbs. I want to plant a pistachio soon. In the past we tried native corn but the rabbits ate it before harvest. We also harvest mesquite pods from the desert when it's a good crop.

Tomatoes, herbs, peppers.

Nothing beats a homegrown tomato. Got the girl one of those aerogrow indoor growers, apparently the larger ones you can do tomatoes if you want to give a shot without having to setup a lot of stuff yourself. All you'd really need though is a grow light. Preferably metal halide in the right spectrum

i may already actually have one... i wont say why, but i do... The CFL lights in it are actually decent, and you can to an extent just add a few more CFL's and you are done...

if i were to go with a much larger grow than the aerogarden, i would definitely buy a CMH bulb so i have proper spectrum for the entire grow w/o having to flip bulbs halfway through... however if i were to have a veg and flower room, i would have a MH and HPS light for each location. This would definately allow me to get more tomatoes and jalepenos more rapidly...

Pure genius. Talk about an excellent and decisive plan for revenge on the hated neighbors. It might take a few years, but oh how sweet that day will be where you can sit on your porch, lean back, sip on some sweet drank...and say...."Wow, that yard is infested with weeds all because of me. I showed them not to mess with me!....well, that was like 5 years ago."

Weed. Not the profitable kind either. The kind that refuse to die even with commercial weed control. I should just scorch the whole backyard (about 100'x50') and start over.

Right now we grow:
Mustard greens
Brussel sprouts
Leeks
Shallots
Scallions
Cilantro
Dill
Thyme
Mint
Rosemary
Sweet basil
Thai basil
Lemongrass
Tomatoes
Green bell peppers
Jalapenos

We also have about a dozen pineapple plants, but I doubt they will ever bear fruit due to the climate here. Right now I have 6 mango seeds sprouting. I am going to start them in pots in the sunroom here and once our house in New Orleans is built, plant them on the property. We know several people in the area who have mango trees that bear fruit, I would love that. I also plan to have a couple plantain trees.

Make sure you've had the ones you want to grow as their flavor is all over the place depending on the variety. Watch out for cross pollination as well.

Not really sure, just planted a crapload of the bottoms of shallots we had cut up. Just noticed them starting to sprout up today. Our gardening philosophy is throw a bunch of crap in the ground and if it grows, eat it. It's worked well enough with leek and scallion bottoms, I had a bunch of shallots the other day and figured what the hell, I'll give them a try.

I have never grown anything before, and am currently growing something... it is something that will always keep my attention it seems. i dont grow tired of growing things, its fun, it's experimenting, it's just about everything i love to do, and yet it is expensive... i wish i had a better room so i could actually grow nice tomatoes, and jalepenos on the regular.. would make cooking so much easier.
