Joy is the natural state of man, in my opinion. You can't create it, but you can create conditions that don't destroy it. We are the environment and what our environment is we will become. We live in and create an environment of violence and competition. We are our structure as long as we sleep. Can the sleeper awaken?

Hmm... perhaps I should have said "recover" their joy themselves. Obviously, humans are inherently good, and joy is their natural state. All one needs to prove this is to see a baby's smiling face.

Our environment IMO is caused by the fact that we cling to the edge of a deep chasm, deathly fearful of falling, scrambling and screaming that someone must pull us up from the edge, all the while not knowing that we can fly.

And as for going back to the trees, I can't wait.
Dare I say it Moonie but I may agree with you a bit on this one...

it is like people in the US just don't care, they would rather drive a huge gas guzzling road hog just for status and style than actually care about natural resources, to me this is very saddening as it shows just how little concern the general public has and the growning sense of entitlement and arrogance.

With conjurs statement on marketing, while I think it does help a bit in motivating or pushing people in certain directions-towards certain fads, I also think that there has to be something at the onset to catch on, or rather you can market a turd all you want it will still be a turd, there has to be some draw that people like and unfortunately for the environment this came in the form of massive SUVs.

The good thing about gas being as high as it is, is that I rarely see a H2 on the roads any longer, they were more than a fad here just a few short months ago but as soon as the prices at the pump started to climb I saw less and less and more hybrids and smaller cars.
You should take a visit down here. SUVs as far as the eyes can see. I even saw an Expedition (the monster Ford SUV) with temp tags the other day. I still see H2s and even saw an older Hummer the other day. I just chuckle.

Except for those who have a genuine need (and some really do), people buy SUVs for the same reason anyone buys anything extravagant. Their insecurities drive them to it. Not marketing. In the absence of the product, they would want such a product. I really don't know why you feel threatened by other people's insecurities. It's not you who suffers from them, but they.

we suffer as well Vic when we are on the roads with them...I remember when H2s were out in force in and around the city, driving was a nightmare as they drove aggressively and for those of us who like to see what is up ahead it was impossible due to their size and height.

while I do sympahtise with those who truly "need" such a vehicle, I don't think that the majority of buyers/owners are those who fit into that category, instead it is the status seekers who want to show of their percieved wealth who gravitate to such large vechicles.

It's not the car, it's the driver mentality. Put 'em in a Yugo and they'd still block the left lane talking on their cell phone never using their turn signals chasing the long yellow while passing stopped traffic on the shoulder.

Well, Mr. Cheerful, next thing you know you'll be telling me people hate themselves.
