how wonderful.

Its been thundering and raining for the last 3 hours.

And now we could get a tornado.

🙁

Tornado warning or watch?

The former means a tornado has been spotted but usually they issue a warning (particularly at night) when the radar shows signs of rotation - hook echo or so called TVS. Does not necessarily mean a tornado is on the ground however one can form at any time with such a system so you have to be alert and (always) listen for that sound. You will know it if you hear it.

They were common back where I am from, not so much here. I practically grew up under Tornado watches / warnings.

After a while it just becomes normal I guess. Watches are issued probably every other day here. People tend to just ignore watches/warnings anyway it seems

Does it matter if its day or night? In Illinois, they always issue a tornado warning if the doppler radar shows rotation, no matter what time of day.

Yes because at night it's impossible to maintain a visual on a tornado moving across the land. Often in the text reports it will have notation that spotters/law enforcement, etc. have spotted a tornado on the ground near n location moving y direction, etc. At night this detail of information is not available. Additionally most (sane) people are asleep at night and if they aren't awaken by sirens by the time it arrives and they wake up it may be too late to reach a safe location!

OP, if you have a tornado warning in your area, then you should seek shelter immediately. I think you ment you have a tornado watch, which is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in a certain geographical area. On the other hand, a tornado warning means that a tornado may be imminent, and that it is nearby. Thats when you will hear sirens.

Even if spotters cannot confirm that a tornado is forming, they will go forth with what the radar says, and if the radar indicates rotation, then the tornado warning will be issued. We get lots of these here, and we never had one touch down... yet.

That may be different else where, most likely the NWS in the "tornado alley" will have more available spotters so they will probably consult with them first before issuing the warning. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The radar will usually "see" it first. It really depends on the operator and other reports as well as conditions. It's better to be safe than sorry. Outside of the area known as tornado alley actual tornadoes are rare but can happen anywhere. Heck on the open sea during squally weather we see spouts fairly frequently. Some are wire thin and others seemingly wide as a city block! 😱

When a hurricane makes landfall the radial velocity radar will show LOTS of signatures but these don't always signal an actual twister. Problem is with sheets of rain and wind gusts over 100mph it's hard to tell what's going on!

I've been through at least several dozen 'tornado warnings' through the years and I've only had one turn into an actual tornado close to me.

You live in London, and I am in Burlington, not far from you....no tornado watch/warning's here...but goddam hail....and my car is not in the garage 🙁

Hmm... OP seems to be offline and hasn't responded to this thread. Maybe he has no power /and or tornado destroyed his house?

We get like three a week here in Oklahoma. Nothing too bad to worry about.

Hurricanes on the other hand...considering how our gov't handles disasters.......

we were under a warning.

as funnel clouds were spotted randomly.

something like one hit Windsor and another hit Ottawa.
