great dane bit my lab on his walk today

This happened in Delhi, where my parents & dog live. Mom & driver were taking Kaza for a walk - he'd just entered the park and was doing his business when the other dog, who had apparently gotten loose from his house across the street & run into the park, ran towards him and jumped on him.

Kaza ran out of the park and back to our car which was in the parking lot ~60ft away (his leash must have slipped out of my Mom's hand when he ran). The dane chased him there & bit him on his neck right next to our car. The servants from the dane's house managed to catch up to him and get him under control, and my mom unlocked the car and Kaza jumped inside.
After getting the dane's owners' information (they weren't home, just the servants), they went straight to the vet. Kaza had a deep puncture wound on his neck, they had to put him under anesthesia & give him 5 stitches. I don't think any arteries/veins were hit as I imagine it would have been much more serious. He's resting at home now, went for a pee in the garden, and has been drinking water. He's very shaken up though.

As far as I know great dane's aren't very aggressive dogs. I'd imagine the dog that attacked Kaza may not be living with the most loving family. The owners work for the U.S. Embassy in delhi - my dad is trying to find out more information. Our vet said that 3 other dogs have been bitten by a great dane near that same park.

here he is watching a bird in the garden:

he was taking a leak. perhaps since the great dane lived in a house across the street from the park, it was a territory issue?

It could be, but if a Dane has really been biting other dogs, there could be a bigger problem.

That young Asian fellow who posted above is right, Labs can't be dicks.

Danes are not generally aggressive and almost never initiate, it's just not how the breed has been shaped to be.

But there can always be individual exceptions.

cute pup. i'd had 2 instances where my dane has been so scared of his surroundings i thought he might snap at me/others. don't get it, he's never been beat and has it pretty damn good.

hasn't happened yet, but if it does he'll have a bullet in his head.

I dont understand how living in India you parents still feel going through the authorities will get them anywhere... Just ask your parents to stay away from that area... OR since they work in the embassy maybe they are eligible to get a firearm permit, ask your dad to get one and shoot great dane next time he comes near.

I honestly do not see any 3rd option.

Sucks OP. Hope he heals quickly.

My dachshund got jumped by a stupid goldendoodle as we were walking by it in the woods a couple of weeks ago. I had jump on top of them and throw the dog off of mine. The idiot dog's owner was like 'dogs just being dogs'. My dog ran and when I caught up to him, I noticed he was bit. When I yelled back to the other guy, the fucker ran with his dog. I lost him when I started to chase after him. I had to take my dog to the emergency hospital since it was late Saturday. I filed a police report in case I bump into him again down the road, they have a reference when I call them.

And you'd be incorrect. There are several aggressive labs at the dog park near me.

Yup. My German Shepherd got a chunk of his ear bit off by a lab. While he was only 11 months old, on the leash, and headed out of the dog park and not interacting with any other dogs. Lab came up and bit part of his ear off (blood running down the side of his face) for no reason.

That said, most labs are pretty easy going.

I trained mine to go for the jugular when she was a puppy. She is a killing machine.

Labs should fear for their lives. After she spent a year in a Tijuana dog fighting ring, I trained her how to fly. She's now a vicious flying dane.

Wow, just wow. Dumbest suggestion ever and a fantastic way to bring a Foreign Service career to a screeching end.
