WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. officials are investigating a report that an apparent hand grenade landed about 100 feet from where President Bush was speaking Tuesday in Tblisi, the capital of Georgia, a Secret Service spokesman said.

The Secret Service has not yet confirmed whether the object was a real grenade and if so, whether the pin had been pulled, said spokesman Jim Mackin.

"We have not seen the reported device," he said.

No explosion was reported.

Mackin said Georgian officials alerted their U.S. counterparts about the incident several hours after Bush departed the former Soviet republic, where he received an enthusiastic welcome in a public square in the capital.

According to the account by Georgian security officials, the grenade hit an individual and fell to the ground, Mackin said.

At that point, security officers recognized the device and removed it, he said. No further details were available.

The FBI and State Department are also investigating the incident, Mackin said.

In his speech, Bush told a crowd of tens of thousands that Georgia is proving to the world that determined people can rise up and claim their freedom from oppressive rulers.

Bush's speech was the last event of his five-day, four-nation tour marking the end of World War II in Europe.

Words cannont describe how upset I am over this issuse. The security that was guarding the president upsets me greatly.

Why isn't this thread locked?

There are some things you cannot say about the President. Threats against his life is one of them.

Freedom of speech has its limitations.

Yeah, and if you were running the show, free speech would be limited to nothing.

Describe how it's a threat agaisnt his life.

You are wishing for his death just like the other lunatics here. That is a threat since you're openly calling for the death of the US president.

Yeah, and if you were running the show, free speech would be limited to nothing.

I would stand against people calling for death of Bill Clinton and I surely will stand up for George Bush. You must not go over the line. The wild eyed democrats must realize that the more insane behavior they engage in like this, the more they will on the fringe they will be. Americans won't stand for this. And if you think this forum represents the real world, think again.

Too bad it was a dud....

the more mean-spirited part of my nature is almost inclined to agree 🙂

(I can say this cos I'm in Australia, no secret service goons here, right..?)

Nah, your country is basically the lapdog of the US so I'd expect them to be knocking on your door in a couple of hours.

What a shame he lost the election.

Equating Democrats with threats on the president. Right.
Your right-wing zeal never ceases to amaze me.

i didnt read it as a threat until i came back and everyone was taking it as a threat. i took the last sentence to mean he was upset about the quality (or lack thereof that would have such a thing happen) of security. however, i did read over his comments quickly, more interested in the story for obvious reasons.
dont know which way he meant, but if the mods read it as i did they may not have picked up on that.

it would have been quite an interesting retribution against bush had he been blown up in a country new to democracy that he *thnks* he had a hand in.

damn terrorists, why attack if they can't do it right

You just went way over the line.

it wasn't a real terrorist. if they had wanted to kill the president, he'd be dead.

Georgia's security chief said Wednesday that the grenade that was found near the site where President Bush made a speech in Tbilisi was inactive.

it was more for a statement like those two joke grenades in front of the UK embassy on the day of their elections.

Anyone missing on the forum?

$20 says it was Dave 😉

Nah he's posting - who else could it be? Conjur's out, but we haven't seen "BBond" today...hmm

If you're looking for a murderer I suggest you start looking in the White House. You'll find several there.

To quote The Beatles:

"It's gettin' better all the time."

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/575174.html
"Georgian security officials discovered a grenade close to U.S. President George W. Bush as he hailed the country's new democracy before a rapturous crowd on Tuesday.

Officials in the former Soviet republic, which had hosted a serving U.S. president for the first time, were at pains to play down the incident, saying it was a dud that could not explode.

Georgia's security chief, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, did not confirm an earlier report from Washington that said the device had been thrown within 30 meters (100 feet) of Bush during his speech on Tbilisi's Freedom Square.

"A (Soviet-made) RPG-5 hand grenade was found at the square," Gela Bezhuashvili, secretary of Georgia's Security Council, said. It had been discovered 50 meters (160 feet) from where Bush stood, he said, but he gave no more precise details.

"It was not in working condition. In fact there was no chance it could explode. I think the aim was to scare people and attract attention," he said."
And now it was 160 feet, not 100 feet.

Confirmed:

Several members on this forum endorse terrorists and wish death upon Americans. (I wonder why people usually associate the radical left as hating America and standing up for terrorists)

Pity that action against them is not taken or even worse ...

I'm upset that the grenade didn't kill him.
And how exactly would that have benefited anyone?

Can you imagine Cheney being President? What about the inspiration it would have been to other terrorists?

In fact, I bet he'd be declared a martyr by some religious groups, stating that he was killed for his commitment to Christianity and decency. That would certainly fire up the troublemakers. You think we're in danger of a near-theocracy now?

I have to agree with CK here on this rare occasion, if someone popped the chimpz0rz the religious wingnuts would be on a martyr crusade.
Hell, they don't even need a good president to have foxnews work their magic to polish a turd into a gem -look at what they did to raygun.

Expect whacked out jesus freaks and misguided middle-americans taking revenge on their fellow americans.
I am in reno today and you can feel the hate coming from rednecks walking down the street near us, it's unbelievable how much this country is divided.
absoloute intolerance -don't push them (at least until we get back on the train and get across the empty part of america to the east coast.) 😛
(we are headed to NYC on amtrak.)

What a shame he lost the election.

Pretty much. I can't understand why the Australian people allow themselves to be lapdogs again.

I wonder what percentage of the US would say Bush is incompetent.

People voted here on domestic issues (the economy), unfortunately as a result we have a prime minister with his head up Bush's ass.
