Gratuitous nudity in movies...where did it go?

Inspired by the Robocop reboot thread.

The way I remember it, any action movie worth its salt that was released from the early 80s to mid 90, would throw some bewbs on screen just for the heck of it. Off the top of my head: Under Siege, The Specialist, Tango and Cash, Beverly Hills Cop, Total Recall, Robocop, Showdown in Little Tokyo...

What happened to this trend? I realize that action films as a whole are much different these days, but I find the lack of breasteses quite disconcerting.

PG-13. It's OK to shoot a woman in the head and keep that rating, as long as long as her top stays buttoned.

What about boobs in random comedies such as Airplane or Monty Python's Meaning of Life? Our movies are suffering from a distinct lack of bare bosoms!

Don't forget horror movies. They use to always have a shower or make out/sex scene with some t&a

Yup, I'd like more boobies in movies. I think the last popular movie I saw that had boobies was in American Gangster.

Yup, good old 80's action movies. Segal FTW. With the internet - pornography got easier, dirtier and cheaper while feature films became cleaner, more expensive, and difficult to sit through in their entirety.

What I find funny is when they have what is clearly a sex scene, yet they don't actually show it. For example you see the girl and guy start to get undressed, and they're conveniently in a bedroom, then they switch to a scene of them "Getting up" from "sleeping". I'm sure even kids under 13 will know what just happened, and it was not P90X in bed.

The odd thing is, every other comedy these days seems to throw in a random dick shot. Male nudity has always been more taboo than female nudity, so perhaps it's just a way of continuing to shock a more desensitized audience?

I agree with that. I can't imagine, if the internet was then what it is now, that I would have worn out the cake scene on the Under Siege VHS tape with such furious rewinding and replaying.

I think it's worse when they do have a sex scene but the girl never takes off her bra. What guy is going to be all, "No babe, I don't want to fumble at your breasts like a blind man working a doorknob... you keep that bra on!"

At least be like some shows/movies and just cover her conspicuously with a damn sheet.

If you are interested there is a film I rented off of Netflix a few years ago entitled "This Film is Not Yet Rated" by Kirby Dick. It highlights several things about the American movie ratings board and how several traditionally anonymous individuals vastly influence the content of American movie media. I would not actually be surprised if there was a significant staff replacement on this board within the early 90's and today. It is also worth noting that foreign films offer a distinct leniency on sexually explicit scenes while restricting gratuitous violence in many cases. Overall It was an interesting documentary and halfway through I was so thoroughly entertained by the content that I had passed out into a coma of excitement.

Brought to you by the same people who think ripping DVDs you purchased to put on your laptop is the criminal equivalent of armed robbery.

Everyone needs to remember the "3-Bs" rule. There are three things starting with the letter B that make ANY situation BETTER.

Boobs
Bacon
Beer

Any two together is a party. ALL THREE is EPIC.

Why bother showing it? We all know what happens and if you want to see it with all the details they couldn't possibly show you even with an R rating it is really just a mouse click away.

I suspect what this thread is really about is why do we not get to see A list actresses nude the way we used to be able to in the age of the gratuitous nude scene. ;)

It's not the sexually suggestive stuff, because it seems like that has actually increased.

You can have a movie where a chick sucks on an ice cube suggestively, then straddles a guy, then takes off her shirt and bra (shot from the back of course), then kneels and starts bobbing her head up and down, only for him to pull out a gun and blow her head off after she finishes.

But a little bit of nipple as a chick gets out of the shower? Nuh uh.

They moved it to premium channel tv shows. See Game of Thrones for an example.

PG-13 and the drive to make more money by cutting down movies for adults until it can get it for more money.

I think it is because you now get the directors cut and get see the nudity. I think that is how they try and get you to buy the blue ray.
