Graphing Calculators

The Godfather

Platinum Member
My Geomtery class expects each student to have a Texas Instruments Graphing Calculator, and since i go to a school where most students are rich, they can afford it.

I looked at amazon.com and each one is $90+. I'm not spending that kind of money on a calculator.

look on ebay then... TI calculators are $$$

my high shcool loaned one to each student but I still had to buy one because I broke it :|

I had a TI-83+ throughout high school, now I use a TI-89 Titanium for college classes. I kind of wish I'd just bought the TI-89 in the first place to save me some $$.

Do note though that many lower level college classes (and most HS classes) will not allow anything over a TI-84 as they will basiocally solve the entire problem for you.

is what i need.

And my parents can't afford that at the moment.

That's bullsh!t. Your teachers are either snobs or are mistaken. The Ti-84 Silvers are the same thing as the Ti-84's with more memory, something you don't need for a Geo class. On top of that, the Ti-84's are essentially the same thing as a Ti-83, which are very cheap on eBay. Grab one of those.

I refuse to buy from eBay. When it comes to software/hardware/technology in general, i like my things to be reliable and new.

Then don't complain about high prices. If you are in a situation where you can't afford something you need, don't be picky and a brat.

About 2 years ago, at this time, there was a sale at BB, OD, OM, or one of those places... $50AR.
It's a crap shoot if you'll be allowed one like the TI-89 in class... personally, I won't allow them in my classes.

A brat? How does me not liking eBay make me a brat?

Fvcker.

Never understood why those things cost so much. Old technology

Most of it is simply because TI is the only company out there that makes them.

Sharp makes some graphics calculators as well.
Not totally sure how they compare, but there are definately other companies out there.

WTF? If you NEED a calculator for your class and you can't afford one brand new, but you think you're too good for eBay, that sounds pretty bratty to me.

qft. Also look around your school and see if anyone is willing to sell you a used one for a cheaper price.

I loved my ti89 until it was stolen. I'm not sure if it was more of a cheater's calculator or an excellent helper, either way, I would not have passed some of my Algebra or calc classes without it.

I didn't say i'm too good for ebay. I said i don't TRUST ebay. Which means i don't want to risk it being delivered all broken up and then having to go through arguments.

I have the Sharp. Good thing I just borrowed it for my sis instead of spending another 60 for a new one.

Yes, other companies *make them*, but TI is the standard. If you have another brand calc and the prof is explaining how to do something, you will not have a clue as the interface is different.

Grab a TI-89. That's all you'll ever need. Grab an 83 and once oyu see the 89 you'll think your 83 is the ultimate POS based on 1925 technology and you'll trash it and grab an 89 also. Don't make the mistake I did by buying another calculator and trying to tell myself that I'll learn math well enough that I'll never need an 89.

Real smart statement. The millions that have used eBay have all been screwed over. It's not that difficult to shop with eBay and be safe, just check feedback and make sure it looks legit.
