Graphics are '60% of the game,' Crytek CEO says

Keep in mind, his opinion is probably biased or narrowed because they essentially strive for ultra realism and believable simulation. From their perspective anything that helps 'suspend disbelief' helps the gameplay feel more real and immersive.

Emotional context? One of the most emotionally touching games I've ever played was in 256x224 in 256 colors (Final Fantasy II/IV)

Graphics dont drive emotion. Story, characters, music, and classic tragedy do.

How about the opera scene in Final Fantasy III/VI? One of the most memorable and solemn events in gaming history, cherished so much as to be reproduced in live performances around the world. Again , in 256x224.

When is the last time a world renowned symphony orchestra performed a scene from call of duty or crysis and left the audience in tears?

I like to say sometimes that kids these days won't read books so they will just skip over the story bits and look for fights anyway. Kind of why certain games sell and pretty scenery sells.

Truly great writing, character development, and story have a long way to go in gaming.

The thing I really hate about most games is that they try to be "epic" all the time. Stories are about saving the world and the entire universe being at risk. It's like AAA game developers all started worshiping Michael Bay or something......which is enough to make anyone into good storytelling vomit.

That is so boring to me......it's the human story that is interesting. I want some characters that I actually care about. Dialog that isn't written to entertain a backwards-hat wearing, Doritos eating adolescent.

That all said, I'm also a huge fan of graphic fidelity and using environmental art to drive immersion. I don't think great art direction, graphic quality, gameplay, and story have to be mutually exclusive traits. God bless the developer who actually cares enough to put them all together with equal focus.

Persona 4 is one such a game(I mention it alot lately because I recently finished my 3rd play through). It wasn't about saving the world. It was about how people can be evil, twisted, wicked, and total liars. Both to themselves and others, creating a terrible world to live in. We are fake to people to hide how we really are etc. Whether it be out of embarrassment, fear, or unwillingness to accept reality. The whole story was really about friendship, understanding, trust, and how one kid from the city could touch the lives of the people who live in a small town he called home for only a year.

It's kind of lame and sometimes a bit mushy but it's unique among story telling. It has dialog that runs the gamut from serious, to silly, to funny, to stupid, to awkward. It's one game that isn't trying to build tough guy macho hero characters but real people with every day high schooler issues.

Poor guy. Spending should absolutely go in the following order: music > main PC gear (for a gaming rig) > audio playback gear (for the PC) > other PC peripherals. Also, if you haven't been bitten by some of the bad Ozzy and Black Sabbath remasters, or clipping and compression BS David Bowie has done to his old stuff in re-releases, I don't want to know you 😉.

This is why after all these years, I still use my Wolfson DAC-equipped Chaintech AV710 with an Onkyo 5.1 surround receiver in stereo mode and 2.1 speakers (powered subwoofer and upper-mid-range Pioneer 3-way bookshelfs).

He has a lot invested in graphics, so he defends it. Crysis 3 looked real good for the first 20 minutes, but quickly became borring and I haven't had a desire to play again since. I will not finish the game and I am not even half way through, but it does look great though. So IMO, even if graphics really are 60% of the game, you still need the other 40% for crying out loud (something they missed on this one).

The guns look, sound, and feel great as far as a game is concerned. The bow is real fun. I thought it was a decent shooter.

I'm still glad they made it. Regardless of gameplay, it will still be a new bar for 3D graphics which does indeed push the industry forward. We just don't need every AAA title to try and be Crysis though.

No offense, but for a person who finished 200 PS3 games, I'm not sure you are the right person to ask about how a game is 🙂 I get the impression you aren't that hard to impress and don't get bored easy 🙂 . I didn't know there were 200 PS3 games worth playing, let alone finish 🙂

My problem with the Crysis games has always been that, they are fun to look at..but that's about it. Everything else in them is..standard. I've tried to like them...but meh.

I agree about the second, and from what I saw, the third one. The first one and the Warhead were fun to play.
