Graphic Novel suggestions?

Something newer. I have most of the classics- ie: Dark Knight, Elektra: Assasin, Watchmen, Ronin, etc.

Some independants too- I don't have many of those.

When I was little we called them comics
I still call them comics 😉

Comics are still comics.
Manga is manga.
Graphic novels are graphic novels.

Each is different; more in some ways, less in others.

I wondered what the hell a "Graphic Novel" was.

Learn something new every day.

Of course now I've forgotten something else I HAD known.

And (drum roll please....) I still call them comics! 😀

j/k. I know what you're saying.

Kingdom Come (alternate Dc future...fight between Superman and Capt. Marvel), Dark Knight Returns 2... Authority: Under new management...(great stuff)

A Graphic Novel can be many things, but it's generally either a one-shot released book, or a group of comics collected in one volume that's one story- ie: Watchmen, DKNR, Elektra.

But there are books that are out of the norm, like Will Eisner's "A Contract With God".

Rgr- Got them.

Have the 1st two Sandman books too- I can always grab the rest, or Books of Magic, etc.
I have alot of the major label stuff DC and Marvel, including The Authority, Planetary, etc.

Let me try to narrow it down- What I don't have is many of the Marvel titles that have been released in the last year and have made it quick to TPB format- most of the "Ultimate" Spider-Man, X-Men, etc. Any good?

Independants too and Magna would be good suggestions- I do have Akira and Ghost in the Shell, but that's about it.

The story Arcs in Usagi Yojimbo are often collected into Graphic Novel format, it's very good.

The Hellboy stuff is good too.

Brian Michael Bendis' Jinx reads like a Tarantino film.

Garth Ennis' Preacher is chock-full of religion, violence, and sex (a lot of it intended as gratuituous shock value) but has some of the finest character writing I've seen in the medium.

Gary Spencer Millidge's Strangehaven is a must-read for Prisoner or David Lynch fans.

Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess' Stardust is a modern-day fairy tale, which has since been reprinted without illustrations (which is an utter disservice).

I'm eagerly anticipating The Hedge Knight.

It's based on a novella by the same, which was written by the brilliant George R. R. Martin.

If you're familiar with Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, this story is set in the same world, but in an earlier age.

"Graphic Novel" sounds like some kind of explicit porn book or something.

That was the first thing I thought too. Somebody should clarify the differences between a graphic novel, manga (isn't that like anime porn?), and comic books.

To me it just sounds like a glorified term for a comic book. 🙂

It is, but it also implies a certain format(s) and also a complete story rather than a serial as most periodical comics are.

Typically a graphic novel is a short series of square bound (not stapled magazine type) which begins and ends a complete story.

some people prefer to ingest comics this way as it prevents the whole, they were born, they got hit by cosmic rays, they died, they were resurrected, they died, they were reborn, more cosmic rays, they died, they visited another plane, they died, it was all a dream, progression of many of the more mainstream series.

How about the whole Akira series?

I am about to finish it and it was great.

Or

How about the From Hell books that the movie was based on...
