Can you please recommend some mediocre schools to apply to for computer science PhD or Masters? My biggest stipulation and I won't bend on it is that it has to be warm weather. I am already applying to UF, UT, UC-Irvine. Thanks.

California State Schools are pretty mediocre, have you tried them? I went to San Diego State for a MSCS.

I can't say much about the program, but the weather and "view" are good.

How about University if Mexico or a Carribbean school. They are mediocre and you have good weather.

Don't taking people's opinions here as fact, since most of the times they're wrong, like how people are saying UCSD is a top 10 when it's ranked 20th (it's still a good grad school though). UF also has one of the lowest acceptance rates for engineering graduate schools. Not sure how the CS acceptance rates are or how many total they accept, but last I looked they had a low acceptance rate.

I hear good things about Georgia Tech. If I had gotten a job in Atlanta I was considering doing a M.S. part-time there.

Well most people here don't have a US News subscription so everything is based on the free listings. UCSD is ranked #13 for "engineering", but I assume the ranking you posted is specific to the CS program and more accurate.

Actually, computer science actually isn't considered engineering by US News :)

yea it's considered a science, while computer engineering is in the "engineering" section... go figure

and people skip cmu because if you think cmu is mediocre... well you have unusually high standards.

How come everyone keeps skipping CMU?

Well the OP said warm weather...is it warm in Philly? ;)

CMU is in Pittsburgh :)

Damn it...I mean't Pittsburgh. I'm ashamed considering I might actually go there in the Fall :Q

Or maybe UCLA instead...I hate the cold weather even though CMU is a better school :(

Well they are kind of different... Some fields are similar, but I wouldn't say they're the same.

The people I've been around here in the bay area don't give berkeley enough respect...most of my friends said they wouldn't go even if they were accepted because they don't like the location. I wonder how someone from a far away school like CMU would fair in the job market compared to a Berkeley grad. Since Cal is so close and there's a lot of alumni in the area do you think they will receive less attention? All other things between the two job seekers being equal of course (prior job experience, GPA, etc)

The one thing I've found most impressive about CMU CS grads was the repuatation of the school and the student's instant credibility because of it. One of the top grads a few years back made 150k straight out of undergrad. That's just incredible.
