Don't taking people's opinions here as fact, since most of the times they're wrong, like how people are saying UCSD is a top 10 when it's ranked 20th (it's still a good grad school though). Rankings aren't everything, but it's still useful to get a list of schools and you can think of the other factors for yourself (cost, location, fields offered, type of school, etc.).

Well most people here don't have a US News subscription so everything is based on the free listings. UCSD is ranked #13 for "engineering", but I assume the ranking you posted is specific to the CS program and more accurate.

Actually, computer science actually isn't considered engineering by US News :)

yea it's considered a science, while computer engineering is in the "engineering" section... go figure

and people skip cmu because if you think cmu is mediocre... well you have unusually high standards.

Well they are kind of different... Some fields are similar, but I wouldn't say they're the same.

actually i was being facetious :p guess that didn't come across too well

That is impressive but a few years back you could get an MCSE and earn 70k a year :p

I wonder how someone from a far away school like CMU would fair in the job market compared to a Berkeley grad. Since Cal is so close and there's a lot of alumni in the area do you think they will receive less attention? All other things between the two job seekers being equal of course (prior job experience, GPA, etc)

I work for a highly sought-after corporation... and our engineering hiring managers love Berkeley and Stanford grads above all other schools.

Thanks for the help guys (especially CanOWorm's lists). I just am having one of those panicking moments and think I will put in for Georgia Tech masters too since they have a late deadline (if things don't work out well with my already submitted applications). If I hurry, I can catch Rice's deadline for PhD. I am told that getting in to UF's graduate program is pretty safe bet since I am coming from the undergrad. (Technically I will be in computer engineering if I go to UF.) Again, thanks for the help.

Sorry to bring "bad" news, but Rice, along with UF, have the two lowest acceptance rates in engineering grad school (it'll probably be similar to CS)! So, you might want to add more than just Rice!

Good luck though!

Well I don't think he thinks it's mediocre since he also said he might apply to GA Tech. Rice might not be ranked top 20 or maybe not even top 30, but it's one of the examples of how rankings don't mean everything.

Grad school is too important to complain about weather...I am from sunny SoCal and I'm going to CMU for grad school. I actually like the change in weather...of course I prepared for the weather pretty well.

About 200-300 bucks on Ebay in the summer will get a really nice warm gortex jacket w/ liner and some nice softshell pants and a few other items you need to make winter easily bearable.

And my little addition...don't pay too much attention to US News and World Report...their ranking systems is based far too heavily on academic reputation among professors (typically deans, department chairs who have the least amount of time to stay current with overall research in their field -- I know, I work for our department chair), and membership in organizations.
