The ATI machine is a much better value. I'd grab that one.
I want to make one thing clear though, don't expect much gaming power with either machine.

Personally I would go with something with a less exspensive cpu and get something with more graphics power.
That cpu could run 3 6750's and beg for more.

You really think the ATI wouldn't be able to game fairly well?

Feel free to offer any suggestions :)

That looks like a good lappy. I'm going to hope it's GDDR5?

Its gddr5 but in the envy the 5850m is slightly underclocked to keep heat under control cause it's a thin laptop for a gamer. I believe it is between the 260m and 280m in terms of performance. It still would run all over the 6570m you're looking at. I've been playing fallout new vegas @1080p with high (not ultra settings). The screen looks sick. Watching blu rays on it is insanely good. If you're looking for all out gaming go with the Asus G73 line of laptops. I wanted a portable gamer but also wanted the blu ray so this worked for me. If I wanted a strictly gamer only I'd go with the G73. A G73 with a blu ray and 1080p screen is like $1500 though so for $300 less I could sacrifice a little gaming prowess.

Speaking of that.

5850, blu ray, beautiful 1080p screen, i7 cpu. Replace the stock drive with a ssd, use the stock 750gb drive as a second drive, and you got yourself a real desktop replacement. You won't find more laptop for the money anywhere imo.

Yea thats a nice laptop.......what is your price range OP?

This one will be faster then your desktop for $650

I suggest you look on the ASUS website ,pick a gaming laptop, google the model number to get a round about price that is good for you ,and get back to us.

The HP Envy is getting pretty high up there...but if it will offer quality performance for a while, then I'm willing to spend that

Ok so under $1,200 ok,lets do some digging. :)
The envy is nice for $1250 don't get me wrong, but lets see if we can do better.

Oilfieldtrash? what do you think of the one I linked for 650$ with the gtx260m? Is the Envy worth double the price?

I bought the envy so you know what I think. :D

It really depends on him. If he needs a gamer only he could get the g73 from best buy for $1200 plus tax and it comes with a 5870m which is a much better gamer but screen is 1600x900 and much poorer quality. If he wants to go cheap an older asus refurb with a gtx 260m is the cheap way to go. 260m is more than adequate.

I had that exact laptop at one time Happy and its good. The cpu is kinda lacking though.
I'd go with this if he wants a cheaper lappy.

a better res on screen and a better cpu for near the same price after you factor in tax at TD.

Nice, I agree, for a cheaper option thats hard to beat.

Yes for about $1,200 that laptop is a beast.

I guess it's up to him, what do you think think OP?

I WANT IT ALL! lol

I plan to mainly game on it, which obviously is the most demanding thing I could do on it (besides CAD).

If the Envy will work very well, then I am happy with that. If the g73 is a BETTER gamer then I'm happy with that too.

Games I play - Black Ops, LOTRO, New Vegas, etc

Looks don't matter to me, I want one that will work well.

I'll be looking for pics and etc first, but if it seems like its in good condition I'll buy it. It's the better of the non W series G73's, and would save me a good 500 or so dollars on the same model.

Since it is used the already shit battery life might be horrendously bad, you might consider picking up a new battery unless you are going to have it next to the socket 24/7 ;)

The 1080p screen on the g73 scored really well in Anand's review. I think for $1000 you can't beat that. I think you'll be happy you sprung for a higher quality laptop than what you first looked at. Let us know how it works out.

Thanks! Hopefully I can get some pics from him on how it looks and make sure it's in good condition still. I appreciate all of your feedback guys :)

I'll report what happens!

Edit: Oilfield, is this a better spec'd laptop than that Envy you showed me?

Yeah you got a better gaming laptop than mine easily. I think it's the same cpu. Screen quality is a little lower though but it's still a really good screen. No blu ray on the G73 you're looking at. If you're not interested in a blu ray then the g73 would be better for you. Here's Anand's review of the envy 17 and he talks some about the g73 as well.

If you can wait you might want to see what mobile sandy bridge and the new mobile gpu's from nvidia and amd have to offer. It's a couple months away at most. I bet that's why the envy is so cheap right now. But if you buy a sandy bridge laptop you're not gonna get any discounts on them.
