In her press conference tonight:
"I have 2 issues to talk about.

#1 300 Arkansas guard troops just back from Iraq are now in New Orleans. They are under my orders to restore order immediately. They are armed with M15s and are trained to use them. They are battle tested. They will restore order. The people who are interfering with our attempt to help the people of New Orleans will no longer be tolerated. We are expecting the other troops that I have DEMANDED soon.

#2. Dennis Hastert said today that we should not rebuild New Orleans. I DEMAND an apology, and I DEMAND it immediately."

There ya go, Governor! Kick some ass, seabass. Order needs to be restored so the evacuations and rescues can proceed safely and the levee breach repairs completed.

Although, I earlier heard on WWL that the 17th St. canal breach should be repaired by tonight! :)

That poor women has probably aged 10 years over the last 5 days. Can't say I'd want her job for anything in the world.

Good to see she's starting to show some teeth. The initial shock and horror of has worn off. Time to switch to ass kicking mode and take care of business.

I dont have a problem with New orleans being rebuilt. However, they should make port fees cover the levees for the city.

Are you suggesting that we let them rot and cut our losses?

Get the people out of the city make sure they get some form of aid. Then let them go...

The city is basically gone, unless it's somehow worthwhile to rebuild the city. You'll have to convice me on that one.

Given how long it is going to take to rebuild, I bet a large portion do not return..

well, right or wrong, I think capitolism will ensure that New Orleans will be rebuilt. the land is just too valuable to let sit idle when it can be used to make money. Where the money and jobs go, the people will follow. Now if somthing to this extent happened in some barren dessert city then it might not be rebuilt, but not in the south.

We should, indead we MUST rebuild the port of New Orleans. The Mississippi is the lifeblood of this nation. We can not do without this. There must be a city that supports this port. Think and consider. I'm not saying do or do not but we must restore the port and be able to man it. The state of louisana is sinking. This is a documanted fact. Now where do we go? Memphis is the port town? I think trafic will be a problem. We need gulf access not river access. You can build up huston but you cant replace the access the mississippi gives to this country. We really need some thought here. This is not trival stuff. I agree rebuilding below sea level sure sounds like a waste of capital but you have to consider the importance of the port.

new orleans needs to be rebuilt, but they need to overhaul the levee system. most of it hasn't been touched since the 1960's

Don't be nieve; Even with millions worth of levy work it would not have held up against a storm as powerful as Katrina. Some of the flooding might have been prevented but overall the damage would be similar.

Man just can't build anything that can withstand a category 4/5 hurricane 100%.

Then it's a good thing your just a little geek behind a screen without any input into the situation nor might I add will you be doing anything to help rebuild it so why don't you just stop using the "we" monikor. The people of NO will rebuild their city using the insurance money they recieve if they see fit, it's not up to you nor will it ever be.

I hate double posting but this was posted while I was replying.

Man can build anything to withstand anything, short of a cometary impact. It's simply a matter of money. I could easily design leevies that could withstand a 400' tidal wave of molten lead moving at 600mph, you just wouldn't want to pay for it.

Many of them were under insured or not even insured at all.

Then you should know that if you live in a FEMA designated flood plain you cannot have a mortgage without flood insurance and the entire city of NO is a designated FEMA floodplain.

solution: rebuild city but this time build a giant glass dome with waterproof seals. That way water level can rise all it wants and it will be dry inside. greenhouse effect might be beneficial as people can just cook meat on the burning hot streets and save on fuel/charcoal.

I'm not talking about an underground bunker :D

My point still stands. There are no levies nor man-made devices sufficient to protect an entire modern city from a Category 5 Hurricane. Period.
