GOTY:Of course its none other than Metroid Prime

Just beat Metroid this morning. Its certainly a great game. I however wouldn't place it anywhere near my all time favorite games. I think it did what it set out to do though - bring Metroid gameplay into 3d, and it did that flawlessly.

pffft. So are you saying that Splinter Cell isnt derivative of MGS????
u are an xbox fanboi.

Can anyone name me a game that had absolutely zero similarities to any game before it? Face it, everything made today is simply an update on a tried and true formula. The closest one I can think of is Black and White, and that was simply strange.

All of the "X of the Year" rankings are skewed anyways 'cause it's easier to remember how great something is if it happened last week compared to January or February. 😛

Nah, it's Game Spot. It will win next year when it's on PS2 and Gamecube.

Good ol' game spot. The only place that thinks Splinter Cell's graphics are only worthy of an 8 yet Tony Hawk 4 is worth a 10. All of that detailed lighting and complex textures in Tony Hawk. mmm.... Lets not forget how the clipping, weak textures, bad lighting and slowdown in GTA:VC aren't enough to pull that game's graphics score down past a 9.
So true. Gamespot is probably the only gaming site I no longer trust...they're so biased it's not even funny!

Metroid Prime is good and maybe deserves it... I haven't played through all of it but I sampled a couple hours of it at a buddies place. Overall I'd put other games above it but that's just my opinion.

Got this from www.gamerankings.com. If you aren't familiar with gamerankings, they take all the trusted reviews from around the net and game magazines, compiles and averages them. Here is the all-time listing of best averages. Splinter Cell still ranks up there, but for Prime to fall 4th on the all-time list, it's in the company of some great games, and deserves the GOTY from any publication.

25. WaveBird Wireless Controller NGC Nintendo 11 8.6 93.5% 95.2%
26. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 PS2 Activision 32 8.0 93.3% 92.2%
27. Metal Gear Solid PSX Konami 40 8.7 93.3% 93.9%
28. Rayman 2: The Great Escape DC Ubi Soft 40 7.8 93.3% 92.9%
29. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask N64 Nintendo 55 8.5 93.2% 93.1%
30. Advance Wars GBA Nintendo 48 8.8 93.2% 93.3%
31. Resident Evil Code: Veronica DC Capcom 56 8.2 93.1% 92.7%
32. PS2 Network Adaptor PS2 Sony Computer Ent. 10 7.9 93.0% 90.8%
33. Metroid Fusion GBA Nintendo 30 8.3 93.0% 92.7%
34. Final Fantasy IX PSX Square 56 8.6 92.9% 92.2%
35. Splinter Cell XBox Ubi Soft 49 8.5 92.9% 93.0%

The credibility of that site just went down the crapper. It list a Controller and Network Adaptor (Fyi PS2's Network Adaptor is a joke). Plus a "compiled" list of misc websites and using their own "formula" doesn't mean jack.

As stated, you'd have to be smoking crack not to consider Splinter Cell a top 5 game of the year. If Splinter Cell is a ripoff of Metal Gear, then Metroid is just another ripoff of other FPS games.

Also take into consideration that the AVG. Vote is 8.0 for Metroid, but 8.5 for Splinter Cell? Those numbers are as wacky as can be. Those AVG votes are the USER votes. Do i really care what a publication says? Or do i care what the people playing it care. 🙂

First off, the credibility went nowhere. The network adapter being a joke it based solely on your opinion, as mine is that it is a really good peripheral. Many people agree. True, it's no XBOX Live, but how can the NA be a joke? It combined dial-up and broadband in one for only $40. On the Dreamcast, you had to pay extra for a broadband adapter, and Gamecube, each is a seperate purchase for dialup and broadband. And XBOX, if you can't get broadband in your area, you are screwed. No online gaming for you. It's a nice device with some really good games online right now, so I don't think it's a joke.

Second off, you are very correct in saying that Splinter Cell should've been in the top 5 games of the year, if not #2 or #1.

Third off, don't look at the user votes, as those are useless. The only thing that matters is the very last percentage that is on the line.

Sorry i mean its a joke compaired to Xbox Live. I've heard about some people having problems with SCOM and other games. lag and such.

But that site is still a joke in its formula

"Legend: Name of the Game / Platform / Company / # of Reviews / Avg Vote (user voting) / Main Score (don't know what this is) / Average Score
Score "

Ok what is the "AVG score" based off of? Still I'd rather base my opinion off people who actually play the game than review places who could possibly be bias.

I don't have a clue because I never played MGS. Total Annihilation is similar to Starcraft is similar to Age of Empires, so what? I personally don't own either game, but have played Splinter Cell some. Based on what I have seen and the reviews it has gotten, it is clearly a good game. The fact you can't recognize that makes you a fanboy. I recognize that Metroid Prime is probably a damn good game though I haven't played it. That is what differentiates the objective gamers from the fanboys 😉

And your urination comments border on trolling.

I don't think I've yet to play a game of Unreal Championship over XBOX Live without lag. And the "AVG Score" is based off of reviews that other websites and magazines have rated the game.

Say a game got a 7.2 from Gamespot, 8.4 from IGN, and a 7.5 from EGM. Each score is changed to a percentage of a 100% scale, then all scores are averaged. So this particular game would get 77% "AVG Score" based on the review industry as a whole. I think this gets around the bias factor a bit, especially if a particular game has 40 something different reviews factoring into the average score. You can see how many reviews a game has by the field "# of Reviews".

And I differ in opinion in basing my opinion of other people. As you'll see in this thread, the regular gamer is more biased than any website or magazine could ever be.

SPlinter Cells primary flaw IMHO is the 3rd person perspective.
I do not like how the character controls, sam with metal gear, its overly complex and dodgy even when you get used to it.
