There is just one problem that Piranha Bytes claims that they still own rights to Gothic which JoWood has denied and claimed that they own the rights now. I'm betting that there is going to be a lawsuit from PB against JoWood within a month if they try to make G4 and seeing that PB is apparently having little financial difficulties (they did not get any money from Gothic 3 apparently o_O ) I bet that the lawsuit will end so that JoWood will pay a decent amount of cash to PB for the rights.

After that we will see dumbed down Gothic 4 which will have shiny new graphics plus lots of action and nothing else so that mass-market will buy it.

and what about the G3 expansion?

G4 is 3 years off

and what does this mean?
Since Pluto 13 and JoWooD have not come to terms regarding the development of Gothic 4, the collaboration has come to an end.

Ugh... I say they leave it alone and walk away now. Gothic 3 was pretty crappy, it's only down from here...

It was never official that there would be an expansion, only rumours and seeing that PB doesn't have cash or apparently the rights to develop the anything related to Gothic, if JoWood is correct about who owns the rights, I don't think we will see any expansion pack for G3 ever.

if they don't do the expansion, they are pretty stupid .. and i doubt i will ever buy G4 ... ever

G4 is probably well over 3 years off and will be buggy as hell
... the 2nd part is *guaranteed*

if it such buggy crap on the PC do you think they will take the time to debug it for console?

i see the End coming to the Gothic series ...
... i wish i could say 'too bad' :p

and they are looking for beta testers ... perhaps they should try the Zoo

This is like the manager of a band firing all the members at once, hiring all new people, yet keeping the band's name and songs.

Yeah, I think that the Gothic series is officially dead now.

The story and atmosphere in G1 are better, but G2 is bigger and more complete, polished. Definitely worth playing if the graphics don't bother you too much.

even Gothic is not that bad ... i just didn't like the controls [at all] in the Gothic Demo [plus it is not on sale :(]

i am not such a graphics whore as the ATF membership make me out to be :p
--i am playing Armed and Dangerous and enjoying it ... anything better than HL1 is completely 'playable' ... anything better than Q3 is 'cool' ... i can find complete "immersion" ... just hope it looks good in WS.

also ... really enjoying RE-4 now that they patched it .. even with a controller

i can handle Gothic 2 and the Night of the Raven ... i like the "gothic" world ... the story counts for a lot
--that is why i was so bummed with the G3 endings and broken MQ/SQs

The Publishers ought to cut a "deal" with Piranha Bytes for the G3 Expansion ... and farm out G4 to someone else
win-win

I agree,G1 had awarkard controls and took me awhile to get use too,it did have the best story/atmosphere,G2 is a polished game and was nice that you get to visit old places from G1,as to G3 well that could of been a very good game if it was not rushed out with the many bugs it had ( plus story and endings was not good),I understand that they have deadlines etc.... but there is really no excuse for G3,especially when you look at G1,G2.

It's a learning curve, but they grow on you and feel natural after a few hours. Gothic was first designed to be keyboard only, mouse was added later.

You can still get the original Gothic here:
http://www.piranha-bytes.com/order/order_online_new.php?id=140

Several months ago I couldn't find all the cds from when I bought Gothic years ago, so I went through and purchased it through the download. No problems at all with the transaction. It's like $13.50.

Gothic 3 just suffered from wanting to make such an expansive map with countless towns, instead of using a small map and focusing all efforts into making those the best they can be. Think how great the town of Khorinis was in Gothic 2 - it never would have been that great if the world were 3x as big.

thank-you ... i appreciate the review ... yeah, they needed another year for G3 ... but i guess they HAD to compete with Oblivion ... that is why an expansion makes so much sense for G3 ... give Piranha Bytes their last hurrah and a chance to make some bucks and let it go out with a bang!

and it looks like i am working backwards thru the Gothic series ... i did the same thing starting with Thief DS .. the earlier games were way better [even if the graphics sucked really bad]
... i hate D/L'ing anything since i am stuck on Dial-Up ... but i am sure that "someday" someone will want to trade Gothic for one of my games

in fact ... someday ... i still hope to trade for Morrowind
:Q

i still have a few hundred hours of great gaming before Crysis comes out ... maybe even 'till it is patched!

Don't get why they had to compete. It's not like they were mutually exclusive or even came out the exact same time. If it weren't for the combat system and bugs, it would have been great.

looks like there may not be a G4 :p

http://www.worldofgothic.com/
Today, Piranha Bytes announced the breakdown of negotiations with JoWooD over the continuation of their Gothic partnership. The future of the Gothic brand is unclear.

It seems, the current situation is caused by disagreement over how to meet the demands of the community in adding new content to Gothic 3 while simultaneously developing an AddOn or future installments of the Gothic series.

Ralf Marczinczik, Art Director with Piranha Bytes, reassured the flabbergasted fans about the continued commitment of PB to the fanbase and promised a more detailed statement later this week.

that was followed with the current announcement an hour later:
With today's uproar over news of a divorce between Piranha Bytes and JoWooD, the war to win the public's opinion and favour has already begun.

JoWooD issued a press release about talks between them and prospective developing studios for Gothic 4 on PC and consoles that were going on for several weeks now. JoWooD states, it is focussing on the future console market and wants to pick a developing studio with very high quality standards and bugfree coding abilities.

The press release also confirms the break-up between Pluto 13 (Piranha Bytes) and JoWooD.

ANYWAY .. i am getting Gothic2 Gold including the Expansion [from GoGamer for $11.00 shipped inc tax] ... is the add-on texture pack here any good:
http://gothic.rpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10053&ID=1119

and do i need any patches or is the expansion patched sufficiently? i don't see patches after the expansion.

i should lose a big chunk of my life starting this weekend

The Gold version is up to date out of the box. As with all other Gothic games, save early and save often. Be prepared, this is an extremely long game, especially if you rough it without a guide. Don't know how you prefer to play these games, I'm just warning that there's probably a 30-40ish hour difference between playing with and without a guide. When I played last, I twice had to redo the first ~10 hours of the game before I got it right with using the skill points. Because of the added expansion, the game compensates the extra experience gained by making skills cost twice as many learning points. It can be very tough to get started. I was forced into a situation where I could not advance because the beasts were too powerful, and I didn't have the skill points necessary to equip the needed weapons.

Oh, and one good thing going backwards through these games, group combat actually works! Make use of it whenever you can.

Looks like there is a new game down the road with a new name and some ideas they had for G4,it's in German so use babelfish to translate.(Long thread too 23 pages +).

Thread in question.

Babelfish.

First times a thick of fat THANKS to all fans, that support our team.
Even those among you, who were contentwise not content with the play, state their loyalty to us and prove with the fact their confidence in the fact that we will learn in the future from our errors.

We become also.

We plan already for some months our new play.
This play existed at present only in our heads and formed the basis of our negotiations over Gothic 4, which was finally terminated by the Publisher.

Together with this play a contentwise change of Gothic III was angedacht in the ranges combat system, Balancing and story.
This "back meditation on old virtues" would not have been possible our estimate after with the technology of our last title.
Thus we have the switches in the last months set to own calculation (and partly through renouncement of our content) for this new play, on whose basis we would have wanted to make the contentwise changes of Gothic 3.

Now it however unfortunately came to the separation from PB and JoWood.
Our former Publisher already mentioned in the press that the only important at Gothic Gothic is, and the developer would be replaceable.
We wish our former Publisher all property with its new projects.

I hope with this post office am answered all further questions regarding a PB Patches, which brings contentwise or other changes.

We are naturally also further in the forum on the way, even if not all of us regularly posts.
As soon as we more to say wir's will do.

BTW If anybody is fluent in German and wants to retranslate the above, feel free to do so.

:)

... as not found in G3?

should i take a quick look at a walkthru?

and i bet we don't see G4 for about 5 years ... i think the Publisher is pretty stupid to air their differences in Public and they said some pretty awful stuff about Piranha-Bytes being incompetent ... more like the JoWood is stupid ... i wouldn't develop for them

Well, after seeing Gothic 3, would you really object to the publishers saying that the devs are 'incompetent':p? Who knows, maybe the publisher forced them to force it out the door...

*evidently* the publishers forced it out the door
--G3 is pretty stable right now

and Strangely ... Gothic 1 was fully patched into a decent game .. and Gothic 2 Gold with the intertwined NotR expansion was fully polished as released OoB

you think PB is incompetent or JoWood is stupid ?
--i vote for the Publisher as being stupid without knowing for sure

most publishers are greedy asses in my experience

Well, in the end, It wasn't the bugs that killed it for me. It was the design decisions (i.e. combat, skills, controls, etc.), which scheduling probably influenced, but didn't make. So I blame both, moreso the developer.

You know like group combat in Gothic 3 where you can ask guys to help you out, then once you get into battle your sword swings hit your partners more than it does your enemies, killing him very quickly. In Gothic 2 when one of the characters goes along with you through the map, they are very strong, and very effective killing beasts, and I want to say they are immune to your own attacks. Whatever the case - when you have another character travel with you, it's a good thing, they really help out.

I'd suggest a walkthrough for the beginning, help you understand some of the basics of what's going on, and some pointers to help get yourself powered up quicker off the start. The game is very long, and a couple of the decisions you have to make in the beginning, while not changing the story at all, do affect whether you can advance quickly through the game, or if you're going to have a much slower time advancing. Gothic 2 is an extremely long game with the expansion installed, any way to speed it up is a good thing.
