Considering I put 300 hours into G3 before even a patch came out, expect I'll be getting G4. I realize lots of people had problems with G3 and I even had some of those problems, but they were very easy for me to overlook. The biggest issue I had with the game was the conflict between the nice look of the grass and the overall performance boost of completely removing it. Which is a toggle that bugged me in many 'large world games' - foliage sliders that really do improve performance a lot.

However, Spellbound doesn't have shit under their belt to prove they can pull this game off. On the flip side, Piranha Bytes created a very enjoyable Risen and is coming out with a Risen 2. Hmm.

I loved Gothic 3. I played it with the 1.6 community patch though.

Actually enjoyed it more than Oblivion to be honest.

Arcania - "User Friendly" Sony DRM

ARCANIA – GOTHIC 4 WILL BE PROVIDED WITH USER-FRIENDLY DIGITAL SERVICES BY JOWOOD ENTERTAINMENT AND SONY DADC

Vienna, Austria, September 20 2010; JoWooD Entertainment, the BVT Group and DreamCatcher Interactive announce details of the planned digital services for ArcaniA – Gothic 4 and therefore react to the needs of the gaming community.

“Digital Rights Management as a module of the digital services has always been a tightrope walk between user friendliness and security of the product. ArcaniA – Gothic 4 is different here” explains Clemens Schneidhofer, JoWooD Entertainment. “With Arcania – Gothic 4 we deliver a high-quality product gamers will enjoy playing for hours. This joy and fun should not be disturbed by intrusive copy protection measures. So SecuROM is the perfect solution for us because it offers the necessary security and at the same time it fulfills our high expectations concerning costumer-friendliness.”

ArcaniA – Gothic 4 can be installed on an unlimited number of PCs and only needs to be activated once via the Internet. To play, which can be done at up to three PCs at a time, neither the original disc nor a constant internet connection is needed. The possibility of an uncomplicated transfer of license between the used PC offers a maximum of flexibility to the customer.

“The implemented digital services will be perfected by a user-friendly Auto Update Feature that informs the gamer pro-actively – without an annoying search – about the availability of a new Update and installs with the permission of the gamer right away” says Sascha Geschwendtner, Product Manager Games Services Sony DADC. “In addition other innovative solutions to increase the usability and the comfort of the game were implemented one of them being the verification of the release date. This feature allows the user to install the game in advance and to start it directly on the release date and therefore helps to avoid unnecessary waiting time to access the game-world.”

SecuRom? Ugh, at least they seem to be going with a more benign version of it, but still, ugh. I'll hold off for a while. Civilization 5 should occupy me for a good while.

Gothic 4 demo now available,http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/65726 .

The 1.71GB PC demo is available from your friendly neighbourhood FileShack while the 872MB Xbox 360 demo is, naturally, over on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

The demo "comprises the first two hours of the game and shows the beginning tutorial level on Feshyr Island featuring selected quests," says publisher DreamCatcher.

I installed the demo on my Win7 x64 PC,the game runs great better then G3,graphics are better and decent ,so far I like the game from what I have seen in the demo however the mobs seem too easy to kill on normal mode in my opinion but it might be because you are in the starting area.

Verdict so far its looking good :).

They really need to remove the Gothic title from this game. From a gameplay stand point, it shares nothing with the Gothic series.

I have just finished the demo and they have seemed to have changed it a bit from original Gothic series, its sort of like ok we make it half PC and half console like game, the mobs are way too easy to kill and their AI could be improved for sure.

I hope the full version gets better but its going to be one of those games you either like or dislike, think I will play the full retail version on hard mode,on the previous Gothic games you were no way near as powerful at the start.

Stability was excellent and it was more then smooth enough.
Camera angle was not bad and no issues for me,graphics and sound was ok too.

I would say play the demo right until the end to see if you like this game.

I spent about 30 minutes on the demo between my civ games.

Overall pretty good. Seems to run smooth on my rig. No obvious bugs. Graphics seem above average but I wouldn't say amazing. Combat seems decent although too easy at the moment.

Not bad. I don't think I will buy it full price but will keep an eye on a special. Pity that it is coming out at the same time as the more popular Fallout New Vegas. I think that will cost it quite a few sales

Combat seems much improved from gothic 3. No stun-locking wolves and the combo moves actually seem to be effective. It almost seemed too easy for me, in fact.

Very smooth for performance, same explore/collect/craft mechanic that I find so entertaining for some reason.

The biggest change from Gothic 3: Saves don't take forever to load, and quick-save is almost instantaneous. Hopefully no memory management issues plaguing this one.

I might actually have to pick it up.

*edit* Oh, and I think I'll actually enjoy the magic system in this game, based on what I saw in the demo.

Hmmm, easy mobs. The mobs are something people CONSTANTLY bitched about in Gothic 3, but I liked the difficulty.

I suspect tougher mobs might be later in the game or perhaps they'll eat some steroids for the full version. I personally did not like the stun locking low mobs at the starting area in Gothic 3...

It has to have the GOTHIC name simply because you meet up with Diego... and I suspect you'll meet up with other major characters as well..

Combat seems pretty cool - but it's way too easy to just roll out of the way when the mob powers up for a specialized melee attack.

I was disappointed I couldn't go for a swim [invisible wall or you'd die]

New review here http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/112/1127303p2.html ,they gave it 7.5/10 rating.

Btw its now also available on Steam .
While also saying it's basically a casual linear action game.

Also " In this way, the Gothic series has always filled in a more casual space than similarly minded RPGs.". I can't say I understand at all what he's talking about here, especially considering casual to the extreme Oblivion seems to be his comparison.

I think he is saying its somewhere in the middle RPG wise ,
It’s not going to please hardcore D&D purists or gamers looking for the next Elder Scrolls, but as a middle ground between deeper entries and linear adventures, Arcania: Gothic IV hits its stride.

If it's more casual than Oblivion like he seems to be implying, than it's got to be venturing into Tetrisville.

7.5 is decent. High enough for me to keep an eye on other reviews and more importantly user reviews

I played through the demo. Was glad to see it was very stable. (Win7Pro 64bit and 8800gt) It seem a lot easier than the past games, but it looked like it ran you through a brief tutorial that upgraded you to max weapons and armor. I think it was meant to be easy.

I liked the improved combat. But, I fear Gothic is being dumbed down for the masses. That is the best/worst thing about the G1 and G2 was the insane difficulty early in the game. But the time you've built up your character, you really felt you accomplished something, unlike today's cakewalk games. However, I understand there's probably a limited market for hard games.

I wonder if IGN really played through the whole game.

I hate the fact it's coming out the same day as Fallout: New Vegas. Fallout will be my game of choice that day, but I'll buy them both. Luckily I have a bunch of vacation days left before the end of the year. I'll have some great games to play!

I felt the gameplay was too easy with the demo,I guess with retail version I'll play on hard setting.
