Gothic 4 Arcania first details (26.4.2008 15:15 - levis)
Few lucky subscribers have received the June issue of German PC Games magazine in advance and thanks to that, we've got the first details on Spellbound's upcoming RPG:

* Fully titled Gothic 4: Arcania (as opposed to the previous subtitle Genesis).
* Story set 10 years after the third title and located on various southern islands, each having different climate zones and its own flora & fauna.
* Same as in previous titles, there'll be a hidden place (temporarily blocked by a magical shield/barrier).
* Weather changes, full day and night cycle plus the ability to temporarily cast a spell and change the time of day (e.g. from day to night when you need to slip past guards unnoticed).

* Aside few NPCs from the previous title, some monsters will have a fresh look (however, trolls look the same as in Gothic III).
* With the ability to climb and ride on beasts.
* Aiming for continuity, developers have gone through fan wishes on the forums and are planning on integrating some of them.
* Fully DirectX 10 compatible with advanced shader technology: standing under a tree, not only light will be realistically dimmed, but looking up into the sky, you'll see the sun behind partially transparent leaves.

Gothic 4: Arcania for PC, X360 and PS3 hasn't got a release date yet, it'll be done "when it's done" and won't miss out on this year's Game Convention.
Link.

Release date 12th October 2010.

Interesting, hopefully it will see more refinement than Gothic 3.

Was it ever patched enough to be playable? I only recently ordered a copy, thinking they had enough time to work the major bugs out.

I recommend you install the community patches too, fixes a lot of stuff the latest official patch does not.

Thanks. Kind of like Vampire: TM, Anachronox, and other post-patch hits :)

Didn't they just announce a Gothic 3 expansion a week back too?

Gothic 4 on consoles? Might be good, means they'll have to nerf/"streamline" the controls.

Spellbound, the developer making Gothic 4, also took over development and support of Gothic 3. The most recent 'community' patch was a combination of the community and Spellbound's efforts. They have an opportunity here to score some major brownie points with their fan base by going above and beyond and fixing the issues with Gothic 3. Doing this would ensure a lot of people who felt they got burned with Gothic 3 will purchase Gothic 4.

They now have Gothic 1, 2, 3 packaged together and I am tempted to get it but I am still on the fence because of G3's numeros bugs and their impact on game play. Is it now playable with both official and community patches? How about the memory leak?

If it is now good I'll go ahead and get all three and hopefully 4 will be a result of the community input, critiques, and suggestions.

Thanks for this info Mem.

Well, one and two are both excellent, even if their controls are rather clunky.

In my opinion, if you are running under XP, then Gothic 3 is fine. If you're running under Vista, they you'll have to do some tweaking in order to get it to run smoothly. And you'll still have to save often.

Can't wait for Gothic 4 and the new expansion to G3! The Gothic series has always been my favorite RPG series.

Gothic 3 was a good game that was held back by bad programming. I waited for months after buying the game to see if they could fix it, then gave in and tweaked ini files for hours to make it playable. I dealt with constant freezing and other bugs but it was worth it IMO. Hopefully the addon won't suffer from the same issues and neither will G4.

I've been putting a lot of hours into Gothic 3. With the 1.6x community patch it's pretty playable, at least it doesn't run out of memory anymore.

I'm looking forward to Gothic 4, other then the bugs I've really enjoyed 3 so far.

I do hope that they upcoming expansion for G3 will also boast a plethora of bug fixes and the like, as well Vista compatibility.

Rumor has it (from reading the Jowood forums) that the G3 addon will be standalone. Also, there is no word whether or not it will even use the same engine.

*It's all speculation at this point though.

I hope they're screenshots. Looks awesome, even though they're blurry as hell. I read they came from a russian magazine.

Wanna add that link to the OP?

Are we sure those are screenshots? They look more like conceptual artwork.

I got the info from RPGdot.com anyway they said ,
Head over to CRPG.RU and check out the first screens of Gothic 4: Arcana. Showing various landscapes they can be viewed Here

Hopefully this one won't be a total glitch fest like Gothic 3 though recent patches helped G3 tremendously. I'm always game for a new Gothic and hopefully the usual cast of characters will be in part 4.
