yeah I'm more excited about this game since I think Oblivion fell short on expectations

I'll never forget Gothic 1 in the old camp how some of the NPCs didnt go sleep right away at night but gathered around a fire and some of them smoked swamp weed, one guy played guitar, others just hanging around doing their thing... it was so immersive.

what style of fighting . . . like Oblivion [fps]

. . . or like KotOR [D&D]

?

i HATE kotor's style of fighting.

in other words . .. what does this mean?
All new combat system that allows unprecedented control over melee attacks
like oblivions'

:)

God I hope not. Slash, slash, block, slash, slash, block, repeat . . .

The combat in Oblivion was so dull after seeing a fight for the first couple of times.

The combat in Gothic 1 and 2 was fairly simple, but good for its time. One of the coolest aspects of Gothic's combat was that you're character's manner of fighting changed. When you first started, your character would hold 1h sword with two hands and swing it like a base ball bat. After some training, your character would progress into a master swordsman. :)

Here is a few previews of Gothic 3.

Preview 1.

Preview 2 .

Preview 3 .

Preview 4 .

One interesting aspect of combat is that if you are fighting sentient beings rather than monsters, you must be very deliberate in order to actually cause a death. After winning a battle with an Orc or a human, your opponent will be renderedunconscious.

To actually complete the kill, you must execute a finishing move, complete with special animation. The reason for this extra step is that, because of the open-ended allegience system, you'll always want to be sure that you want the reputation that comes along with killing whoever it is you're killing. Offing another human in front of some Orcs is likely to have no more effect than the Orcs having a laugh at the other human's expense, but killing an Orc leader is liable to put your life in serious danger. Of course, if you're trying to aid the human resistance, killing that same human slave won't help either. Causing death can be very useful, depending on who you want to impress, but it can also be very dangerous, so the game's designers want to make sure you've committed to the ramifications before following through.

The world of Myrtanna is quite large, which befits this sort of game. Piranha Bytes pegs it at about 7.5 square miles overall, which consists of a range of environments including deserts, forests, plains, snow-capped mountains, and more. "It's not quite Oblivion," admits Duncan in reference to the total area of the game world, but he also pointed out that the independent studio operates with only about twenty developers--the biggest it's ever been. At a certain point, the player will learn a teleportation spell in order to actually traverse the world in a reasonable amount of time, a necessary amenity given the game's lack of mounts. Aspyr promises that there will be no loading times anywhere in the game, with the likely exception of when the program is launched.

i just hope it is . . . not . . . like kotors . . . :frown:

and you should download the 'hilarity' mod for oblivion . . . you get to really see NPCs fight . . . their AI is obvious without the 'restrictions' . . . and with or without their clothes
:Q

:D

Oblivion's fighting aint as stupid as you make it to be. :p

. . . i'd call it very good for an "action adventure" game with RPG elements. . . .

I loved the first 2 Gothic games and can't wait for part 3!! I wouldn't mind too much if the action is as simple as the previous games but my lord I hope the control is better. I barely used the mouse as the control was almost all keyboard for me.

I'm sure we'll see some characters from the other Gothic games (Diego, Xardas..etc) and active towns and stuff.

Whoops!!! Who the hell is Xanthus... LOL Remember Mud from part 1?? The dude who followed you everywhere?? Pretty annoying but was fun to give him a fat punch on the head.

I'm glad that its coming here in the US as I heard the Gothic series wasn't exactly a chart topper.

I remember the giant troll chasing me all the way to the old camp front gate in Gothic ,and the guards were fighting it for like 20 mins lol while I just watched, great memories.

I'm glad that its coming here in the US as I heard the Gothic series wasn't exactly a chart topper.

Gothic games were more famous in the European market, even then never got the full recognition they deserved partly due to being a small company etc..,first Gothic had great story and gameplay ,but was only let down by awkard controls ,which was later improved on in Gothic 2.

Gothic 2 took a long time to come to the US because of translation issues. There's also an expansion available for it, but its only available in the US bundled with the Gothic 2 game. Night of the Raven, I think it was called.

I loved gothic 2, some of the things oblivion claimed as new, were already in gothic 2, and the game was far more immersive, overall i think it was a more enjoyable (as in fun) than oblivion (forget the grafics).

The controls are strange at first, but after you get used to them, they make perfect sense.
The combat was decent, i remember thinking at the time, man what a "huge" game, if only they had solved some of the shortcomings that made it a somewhat hard game for the casual gamer, or hyped (publicised) the game like morrowind, and they would have a huge sucess.

i believe gothic 3 is going to be an astonishing game if they can make it feel like gothic 2, correct its faults and add some more content to it.

http://www.rpgcodex.com/ had this translated from http://www.worldofgothic.de/
Here is a summary of an upcoming Gothic 3 preview in PC Action (German mag), courtesy of World of Gothic:

* There will be around 550 different quests, of which 25 belong to the main story. It won't be possible to do all quests in one game, because a large part is only available when a certain group favours you.
* The hero will have 9 different attributes.
* There are about 70 different talents/perks in seven different professions:
o Fighting (17)
o Hunting (10)
o Magic (11)
o Forging/Smithing (5)
o Thief skills (11)
o Alchemy (7)
o Other talents (6)
The developers think it will be possible to reach about level 30. For every level you'll get the usual 10 learning points and every skill or talents costs 5 LP.
* It'll take about 50 hours to finish the main story. For the rest of the quests you'll need another 100 hours.
* The player will spend about 60% of the time in the woods and fields of Myrtana. The other 40% will be spend in the desert area of Varant and the snowy planes of Nordmarr, about 20% each.
* There are around 1000 different items to be found in the entire world.
* For the 250.000 dialogs 62 different voice-actors were used. That is about 18 hours of spoken dialog.
* The zoom options of the camera range from first-person perspective to bird-eye view.
* The following system requirements are mentioned in the article:

Minimum
2 GHZ
512MB Ram
128 MB Graphics card

Recommended
3GHZ
1024 MB Ram
Geforce 6800

Sweet. They had me from "It won't be possible to do all quests in one game, because a large part is only available when a certain group favours you."
Worldofgothic also have an english front end: http://www.worldofgothic.com/

Yup, I've been waiting for this one for a while. I thought it was originally scheduled for a Spring release, but I think they rightly decided to push it away so it wasn't lost in the shuffle near Oblivion's release. Gothic II was great. It already did a lot of things that people were claiming to be new in games like Fable and Oblivion. For me, it beat Morrowind and Oblivion for sheer entertainment value. I hope this one finds the success the series deserves in the US.
