Goth culture: Is it now "mainstream"?

"Goth, when it started, was a subculture," he said. "Now I view it more as a media term."

Now I know quite a few people who were into that scene(and have since grown up😉 ) but now it seems everyone is doing it. Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose? I mean the music I can understand...well...somewhat. I love a good classic gothic music on occasion...oh wait...goth isn't about classical...ooops😛 Anyway - even some of the heavy dark "gothicish" (death)metal I enjoy at times(nver got into punk), but I guess I'm at a loss to understand this new era of kid goths. Also - I guess I missed the whole industrial/trance/whatever shift too - so maybe that's part of why I don't understand why goth has grown.
Is it about the music or is it about the appearance of being "different"(although you aren't that different these days)?

<-- trying to understand where the shift took place...

Siouxsie and the Banshees are "Goth?" What the fusk? What would some narcissistic 110 lbs. soaking wet teenage boy wearing eyeliner and all-black clothing have in common with a band whose most famous song is called "Peakaboo!" 😕

Your serious? Siouxsie is one of the most influencial Goth bands of all time. That's like being surprised that someone stated the Ramones where a punk band.

While Peakaboo isn't their best work (IMHO), sounds like you may not be very familiar with all of their other. And, don't forget Robert Smith really launched himself from their before forming The Cure.

Goths are still a nutty subculture, but from what i've seen some of them are listening to europop type sh!t. The guy in the room next to mine is a goth and he listens to all kinds of wierd crap (he plays "im a barbie girl" by aqua a lot) while im listening to Iron maiden and metallica next door in my polo shirt. The worlds all fcked up I tell you. Surely a sign of the end times.

You're right, I don't keep up with Goth and could care less about it. As far as Siouxsie and Peekaboo, it was on their first album that ever got any airplay and came out the year after I graduated from high school. You'll be lucky if you find 1 person in 10 from my age group who even remembers who they were and didn't peg them as another late 80s flameout band like Love and Rockets, much less can peg them as "one of the most influential goth bands of all time." And that's one sad statement on Goth if you ask me.

new respect for Cad and his taste in Music

have a  on me

Goth (from my little fetish of liking their women) is about making yourself as ugly to the 'preps' who are going to ignore you anyway. This is (IMHO) a reaction to not wanting to be the nerds they really are. There is also two schools of 'thought' in gothdom, there is the real appreciation for the dark and occult, and then there are the Marilyn Manson kids who are just stoners with no friends who dress in black.

All that being said, I'm a punk, and have always been one, and generally we pick on the goths. However I just pick up their women.

No, now go paint your fingernails and dye your hair.

Dye 'em black...and smoke a clove cigarette...little miss scare-all 😉

Anyway - back to the goth issue.

any time a subculture, counter-culture, underground anything is recognized and label as such it ends its existence as an entity of that nature.
the goth "movement" (which was in itself always very vague and not much of a noticable movement in the traditional sense) was little more than an outlet for the club culture of the 80s once that scene became useless for profit.

I don't think the goth culture is all that mainstream, however in any relatively large cluster of population, I'm sure you'll find a bunch of 'em. Never really got into Goth so much, but used to listen to Siouxie and the Banshees (and her more recent incarnation, "The Creatures") ... as well as The Cure ... Bauhaus (way back when) ... and a smattering of other "classic" goth bands. Plus you can find lots of goth influences in some newer music.

I sometimes wonder if some kids get into the scene mostly so they can dress different and stand out and less for the music ... ?

Then perhaps, just perhaps, your not in the best position to comment about it eh? 😉

let's see....

marilyn manson, trent reznor.... nope, it's been mainstream for awhile now

I agree that it's mainstream but the NIN/Manson kids are just one branch. (ie Lost stoner kids)

PS: Once you get a store in the mall, you're mainstream. (Hot Topic.......ew)

I was a goth in high school (well, as much of a goth as you can be in a prep school where suits were the required school uniform 😉 ).

IMO, mainstream or not, goth is pretty much dead now, and has been replaced by emo (a scene with, like the goth scene, has some great music if you can put up with the civilians who make up the scene).

What was/is great about Goth is that in enabled effeminate teenage boys and teenage girls who had trouble saying no to second and third helpings of pie be cool.. at least in their minds

C'mon Red, you've done alot better.

eh I have the same complaints with the radio music pre manson in 80's it had more of it's roots in punk.
The eurotechno stuff VNV doesent interest me nor does much of the scene since people go to malls to buy clothes.
(You can tell someone who buys that crap from stores.)
NIN manson and like that = ick and the "g" label is a product of the 90's it was rarely used for people in black except for a few interviews over the years.
You can still find a few people who carry on the spirit of the forefathers of "deathrock" or "dark/horror punk"
but you have to go to europe to find any number of people like that. America has stifled alternative culture since raygun and most people in black you see
are club kids who get into it for a year or so and do something else. Or metal kids (which are totally seperate and should nto be confused.)
So yeah a 2 bit view on the state of "Corprate Goth" you were wondering about I agree it's lame and stereotypical idiots like you all mention bore me to death. 😉
