So, I got tired of the pretty poor cooling of the stock 680, so... It's too noisy under high load, or too hot. Now at least I'll have silence near to what I have with card #2 (DirectCU II TOP)

Yes, I know it's overpriced and a silly thing to do, but....

Results:

Old temps: 84/71 after 10 minutes.

New temps: 64/73 after 10 minutes furmark.

The new cooler reduced the temps of the top card by 20C and is much quieter. The old card went up 2C, but that's ok. And its noise even a furmark levels is not bothersome.

Lap the stock heatsink :D Some users were getting 5C drop on auto fan, and up to ~15C I think it was on a higher fan setting.

Im planning to do that and also do a comparison with the unlapped stock heatsink and see if I can fit a vapor chamber heatsink used on the GTX570/580 (lapping this one too) on it as well.

lap the gpu, the new heatsink, and get some IC diamond on there...thing should run at 40C under full load :D

Looking at the comparability list, it will probably work on his next card too, so meh.

Maybe, but my first choice would be selling the old card and use the funds towards a card with a built in aftermarket cooler. You lose money either way though soo...

Uhh, GK104 doesn't have an IHS... If you lap the GPU, you're going to need a new video card in short order.:p

To expand on this: A big reason to go this route is that you can go all in for a MSI lightning or asus DC2. While having lower temps and noise is great and all, you still run into issues with thermal / overpower throttling on kepler cards even if your temps are great. In my experience with reference 680s, there was no cooling in the world that could up my maximum boost overclocks signifigantly.....maybe 10-20mhz, thats it.

Thats just me though, definitely let us know how the temps are afterwards.

Current furmark peaks after 10 minutes:

84C at 85% (max) fan for the reference card
71C at 60% fan speed on DirectCU II TOP card

Settings: Windowed, 1920x1200, no AA (produces highest temps in my experience)

I bet you could use 100% fan on the accelero and it would still be quiet. I had an accelero on one of my old 7970s and the thing was absolutely dead silent even at 100% fan, and my load temps were utterly ridiculous. Like 51-52C full load with 100% fan, while overclocked/overvolted....and still silent.

Arctic definitely makes good stuff, price being the main bad thing about their coolers

It should be waiting for me once I get home, so we'll see. I forgot to check to see if any specialized tools are needed to take off the stock cooling. I've had the shroud and the heatsink off, but never the whole assembly. Does anyone know?

T6 torx...

There is a lot to this cooler. Wow. This will take a while.
I hate T6. You almost always have to get those screwdrivers as specialty orders, as very few tool kits come with the screwdriver/bit.

I bought a combo screwdriver at Home Depot that I swore said it had down to a T5 bit, but it was only down to a T7 (smallest they carried, too). I lightly filed the edges down on a piece of sandpaper, rotating it as I went. Fit perfectly in the T6 screws of my reference 680, and saved me any other buying or ordering.

I know how that goes Fezerp, stripping those T6's is the worst thing ever D:

Accelero's definitely take some time to install, the last one I used required like 10 hours for the included glue to cure.

I stripped two of them, but a trick I found out a few years ago with torx. If you strip one, usually the next size larger suddenly will fit (and often better than the original size), so I did that. Now I have 50 more minutes while the glue cures.

Then I can complete the install and test. Woot.

I looked at that...

Then i Added up i can do 2 of Dwoods Antec 620 mods + back plates for about 25$ less then one of those.. so i got the Antec 620s lol.

That thing should be no more then 99$ they got it Horrid over priced.. You could do a Budget Custom loop for around that price..

Here is where I am now. Some are crooked, but eh... It's better than the thick goopy tape stuff and a plate of metal like the stock is.

I'd let it sit overnight, the 2 hours they suggest isn't enough time to cure. Trust me their advertised cure time isn't enough, if they're using the same glue that I remember (mixture of 2)
